Federer, Djokovic, Tsonga through to French Open third round

Roger Federer cruises past Diego Sebastian Schwartzman during second-round action at Roland Garros on Wednesday. Federer is joined in the last 32 by fellow straight-set winners Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Roger Federer tied Rafael Nadal with his 60th career French Open match win by defeating Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 during second-round action on Wednesday afternoon. Federer rolled in one hour 27 minutes to set up a date with Dmitry Tursunov.

“I think it was kind of tough all the way through for me,” the Swiss said. “I didn’t feel relaxed for the entire match… He managed to put pressure on me and keep the pressure on me.”

Novak Djokovic joined Federer in the third round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 rout of Jeremy Chardy. A steady rain looked like it would prevent Djokovic from finishing as quickly as he would like, but he managed to get the job done before any stoppage in play. Next up for the world No. 2 is Marin Cilic, who dismissed Tobias Kamke.

“I managed to play some good tennis and [I’m] already feeling like I’m improving my game as the tournament progresses,” Djokovic explained.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced in routine fashion, as he disposed of 2010 semifinalist Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Tsonga has been in dismal form this season, but he treated the French crowd to one of his best performances in 2014 and needed just one hour and 47 minutes to prevail. The 13th seed dropped serve only once, and that came in a relatively meaningless game at 4-2 in the third set.
