Eala takes down defending champion Swiatek in Wimbledon third round

Alexandra Eala’s rise to stardom continued with a 7-6(9), 6-2 victory over Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon third round on Saturday afternoon. Swiatek, the defending champion, saw her back-to-back bid end after two hours and 15 minutes.

It is the biggest win over Eala’s career given that she had never previously advanced past round two of any Grand Slam, although she also beat Swiatek to reach the Miami WTA 1000 semifinals in 2025. But it’s a win that should not come as a big surprise, as Eala is 27-11 on grass in the early stages of her career — including 22-8 dating back to last summer. She advanced to the Berlins semis a couple of weeks ago, ousting Donna Vekic, Elena Rybakina, and Elina Svitolina along the way.

Now the 21-year-old boasts another huge scalp to her name.

Afterward, “bravery” was a theme of the post-match press conferences.

“I think more than specifically [against] Iga, I’m a very aggressive player,” Eala commented. “So I try to take all the opportunities I can. On grass, (I) kind of try to step in. Yeah, I think that’s the best way I could describe it: try to be brave. When I see the opportunity, I go (for it). Yeah, that’s kind of the whole idea of the game that I’ve had.”

“I felt like Alexandra was more brave in important moments,” Swiatek admitted. “In the tiebreak we both had many chances to close the set earlier, and it didn’t go my way.”

Eala is certain to bring much more offense to the table than her next opponent as she goes from a Wimbledon champion in Swiatek to a Wimbledon runner-up in Jasmine Paolini. The Italian, who was a finalist at the All-England Club in 2024, will battle Eala on Monday for a place in the quarterfinals.
