First-round action at the Dubai ATP 500 continues on Tuesday, when an intriguing showdown features Ugo Humbert and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Jakub Mensik, who played well in Doha, faces Hubert Hurkacz.
Ugo Humbert vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas
Humbert and Tsitsipas will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers when they clash in round one of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday. The head-to-head series stands at 3-1 in Humbert’s favor, including 2-1 on outdoor hard courts. They have not faced each other since 2023, when the Frenchman scored a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory at the Shanghai Masters.
Nonetheless, Tsitsipas has to like his chances in Dubai. The 30th-ranked Greek is an outstanding 15-3 lifetime at this tournament with three consecutive trips to the final — including a title last year. He has never lost prior to the quarters in four appearances. Tsitsipas is also playing well so far this season, boasting a 9-4 record. Humbert is just 4-5 in his last nine matches, so this really wouldn’t be an upset even though the lefty is ranked higher.

(6) Jakub Mensik vs. Hubert Hurkacz
By ranking, Mensik picked up the biggest win of his career last week. The 20-year-old Czech upset world No. 2 Jannik Sinner 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 in the Doha quarterfinals before losing to Arthur Fils in the semis. Mensik is on a heater to begin the 2026 campaign, sporting an 11-3 record that includes a title in Auckland.
Up next for the world No. 13 on Tuesday is a third contest against Hurkacz, who has won both of their previous encounters — in five sets at the 2024 Australian Open and in a third-set tiebreaker at the 2025 Rome Masters. Mensik could not have come much closer in those two matchups, and this time he should be able to get over the hump. Hurkacz was on fire at the United Cup, but the 73rd-ranked Pole has cooled off in a big way since week one of the season.

Tsitsipas-Humbert is a 50-50 match on paper, so no upset either way, but if Humbert were to win, it could be seen as an upset considering how well Tsitsipas plays here, this is a tough draw for Tsitsipas no doubt as Humbert always gives him a hard time, so the pressure is really on him to come through this one since he’s got lots of points to defend, and even if he does come through it, it’s likely Rublev next, which is another tough one for him since he just lost to Rublev in Doha, Tsitsipas is ranked #30 and Humbert is #37 btw, so no Humbert is not higher ranked, this is such a tough call, I’ll take Humbert in 3, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Tsitsipas from my observation often doesn’t do too well when expected to win/under lots of pressure so in this situation I too think Humbert might have the edge and being a leftie helps. Of course it all depends what kind of a day both have; it’s very close and could therefore go either way.
Tennishead, have you a crystal ball or what’s with trying to predict the actual score? I’m just a longtime spectator, wouldn’t class myself as any kind of expert and don’t do comprehensive research on this stuff etc. Just the bits I’m interested in!
Mensik-Hurkacz another interesting match and perhaps tough pick, Hurkacz has seemed to have gone quite cold, though I wonder if it’s more he’s dealing with an ongoing physical issue, he and Mensik play similar tennis, common sense right now says Mensik should have this and maybe in 2, but Hurkacz has the upper hand in their past matches, Mensik in 3 7-6(9), 1-6, 6-4.
Not mentioned is the time of day / night and the difference conditions can make in the desert. The faster/ lower bouncing it is, I’ll take Humbert in three, but Tsitsi otherwise.
