Dubai final preview and prediction: Djokovic vs. Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas will go for back-to-back titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday, but standing in his way is world No. 1 Novak Djokovic–who is undefeated on the season.

Djokovic and Tsitsipas provide an intriguing matchup. Djokovic is undefeated for the season so far, having led Serbia to the ATP Cup title with a fitting win over team Spain. He then snagged his eighth Australian Open title and competes tomorrow for the title in Dubai. But that doesn’t mean he’s invincible.

In the semifinals, Gael Monfils had the Serb on the ropes–down a set and a break and fighting for his tournament survival. He found a way, as he often does, but he was far from his best. This is an opening, perhaps, for a final opponent who knows how to beat Djokovic.

Tsitsipas, the world No. 6, endured a patchy start to the season. A third round-exit in Melbourne and a second-round ouster in Rotterdam left the Greek youngster looking vulnerable going into a stacked field in Marseille. Yet it was Tsitsipas who lifted the trophy last Sunday. And he’ll have his chance to do so again in Dubai. He just needs to get past Djokovic to do it.

Interestingly, the world No. 1 does not have a winning record against Tsitsipas. The two men have played four times and split the wins at two apiece, though it was Djokovic who snagged the last win at the 2019 Paris Masters. Dubai’s top seed has to be considered the favorite, especially as Tsitsipas has played so much tennis over the past two weeks. But if Djokovic gives the underdog as many looks as he offered to Monfils, it’s doubtful Tsitispas will let him back in the match.
