Jared Donaldson was fined $6,200 for vociferously arguing a call during his loss to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Monday. Donaldson got into a heated, face-to-face confrontation with chair umpire Arnaud Gabas as Ramos-Vinolas served at 3-2, 40-0 in the second set.
The Spaniard fired a serve out wide that went for an ace given that there was no out call. Donaldson, however, asked Gabas to come down from the chair and overturn the linesperson’s decision. But Gabas could not find confirmation of a mark and the call of an ace stood.
That’s when the 21-year-old American lost it.

The supervisor came out and the call was not overturned. Before play resumed, the chair umpire gave a code violation to Jared Donaldson for his earlier behavior. Donaldson was, in fact, correct in thinking his opponent’s serve was out (it was on the sideline but well long).
Ramos-Vinols eventually prevailed 6-3, 6-3.
Gabas is the same umpire who got drilled in the eye with a ball struck by Denis Shapovalov during a 2016 Davis Cup tie.
