Djokovic destroys Medvedev for ninth Australian Open title

No matter whom Novak Djokovic goes up against, he is simply too good in Melbourne.

Daniil Medvedev had won 20 matches in a row heading into Sunday’s Australian Open final, including 12 against top-10 opponents. Against Djokovic, the red-hot Russian could not even take a set.

Djokovic rolled to a ninth Australian Open title, improving to 9-0 in finals, by beating Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 in just one hour and 53 minutes. It was his 18th Grand Slam title overall, leaving him just two behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

“When you’re a young tennis player, I think 99.9 percent of players, kids that get a racquet in their hands start dreaming about what they want to achieve, it’s a Grand Slam–winning a major,” the world No. 1 said afterward. “So of course I tried to remind myself, pinch myself, of how important this is. Even though I have been fortunate to win many majors and play in many major finals in my life, I do enjoy the success every single time even more because I know that the longer the time passes, the more difficult it’s going to become for me to get my hands on the major trophy.”

This one was tough only because Djokovic suffered an abdominal injury during his third-round match against Taylor Fritz, which he survived in five sets. Djokovic may have been less than 100 percent against Milos Raonic and Alexander Zverev, as well, but once the injury was no longer a factor, neither was any opponent. Djokovic raced through both the semis (vs. qualifier Aslan Karatsev) and final in dominant fashion.

For Medvedev, it was a second loss in a second slam final–and it was nowhere close to as competitive as his five-setter against Nadal at the 2019 U.S. Open.

“I was there in the first set,” the world No. 4 reflected. “I was up a break in the second. But in the end I lost in three sets, where I didn’t play bad but I didn’t play [at my] best level. Probably he made his game that good today that I couldn’t stay at my best level.

“He definitely was good. I definitely could have done better. But even if I would have done better, (it) doesn’t mean that the score would be different. Today we have this score. I’m the loser; he’s the winner.”

Medvedev’s summary was as simple as it looked for Djokovic on the court–and as simple as it has pretty much always looked for Djokovic on the court inside Rod Laver Arena.

  1. Great performance by Novak 10/10, congrats on the 18th title. Unfortunately Cheryl (Andy) Murray of tennistalk.com underperformed massively, she was a big disappointment at this tournament, just 1/10.

Also a big hello to all nadal tards for mocking Djokovic MTOs and his injury which was observed by the AO medical staff.

  2. Djokovic officially says it’s a muscle tear. Makes this slam even more of a ridiculous achievement. And all the mocking from the nadal fans about djoko faking the injury officially classifies them as clueless about tennis

    • It really astonished me that Novak fans would even bother to trash Rafa fans after their guy won.

      Sore winners. What a shame.

        • amy,

I can’t believe that his gabs have nothing better to do than trash Rafa fans and go after a class act like Cheryl. They are the ones who have no lives. Look at the. Using Novak’s win to trash people. Especially in light of what is going on in the world, this is what they focus on? That is truly pathetic.

What a sorry lot they are.

    • clueless and envy. they don’t have lives, nadal and this site is all they have. the amount of tardiness on this forum is astonishing!

      • Well said Djokovic is the GOAT πŸ‘πŸ˜˜πŸ˜‚, guy’s like you are rare πŸ˜‚.

I like the way you trigger this KARENS just like I do πŸ˜‚,I love them tho… πŸ˜˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰

I respect Rafa but some of his fans here well to put it mildly are retarded snowflakes πŸ˜‰.

  3. As a Djokovic and sports fan, I am happy if my guy/team wins. I don’t get enjoyment out of other teams’ losing. Some players love a certain arena, and we definitely see that with Joker at The AO and Nadal at the FO.

Nadal has improved his two hand backhand and serve, which has enabled him to hit more winners and essentially play better on the non Clay surfaces.

Joker overcame his injury and was a wall his last two matches. The key was his draw. Getting a slow Raonic followed by a choke artist in Zverev was immensely helpful. Then Thiem losing to Grigor earlier was huge before an extra day of rest for The Final.

Lastly, until one of the Big 3 gets beat in a Best of 5 Final, put your money on one of them to win! I hope Federer wins the Wimbledon Tournament πŸ™‚

PS: “Djokovic is the Best”, grow up dude. It’s an excellent online tennis forum and you’re trashing people. Come on man?

    • Mira well part of the problem is that he has a lot of fans from Serbia who are very nationalistic with pretty repugnant views.
Unlike Moose and our own dear Elizabeth…
Also Nole and Jelena really are into some bats66t crazy stuff. There is a kind of mirroring effect with some of the fans.
Whether you like Roger and Rafa or not they are both grounded in a world of facts and evidence.

        • Hey hey hey amy!…How r u?Hope u’re ok over there!U take vaccine already amy?

Bout Nole…yeah!…I agree with u about his Serbian fans amy!…Imo,they’re very aggressive..maybe bcoz of bitterness they feel about the unfair treatment that Novak received..past & present…I think if we were in their shoes,we maybe acting like them too!…I know i will…A while ago,on the other site…1 Novak fan called Rafa a pig..and i trashed him by calling him a pig too(errr…a pig hibrid from pokemon, ninja turtle, spongebob, patrick the star…serves him right!)..

Anyway, granddaugter is 4 months old now amy! & very healthy!..and i’m still in love with her like the 1st day she was born!..I am sorry if sound a bit bragging amy!…but she is sooo cute!haha!!…Thanks for asking amy!

          • Hi darling! Am I going to “see” you in Rotterdam?
How lovely you are enjoying new grand daughter, some joy in these dark times!
I’ve done rather well in the last challenges….but then you weren’t playing….’)

          • Hey hey hey M!…So good to hear from u!…Missed u!..hehe..
Ohh…u playing Rotterdam M??Grrreeaatttt!!…Me?At 1st,i thought wanna pull out..i got injured..suddenly i feel a tear somewhere after i sliding, streching my finger to make a pick on my phone..donno whether i can play 4 or 5 setter with the Big server like Big Al or legendary Witch from Welsh with serious injury like this…but, wait a minute!…oh yayy!!…i can play after all!..Who would have thought my injury would disappeared overnite!..Magic!πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

Oh btw!…much congrats for excellent bracket this week M!…wooohooo!!…U sweep all 3 of them!…Good job M!

            About being grandMA…AWESOME M!!…Woohoo!!

          • Mira aka grandMA! Am very happy for you and I give you official permission to brag as much as you like!πŸ˜€ you are the least boastful person on the site so you have some catching up to do!πŸ˜€
Mira hon, have you noticed that Rafa has lost fitness? He got tired in the 3rd set at Rg repeatedly. Then just completely ran out of energy against Meddy at the Atp final s.
I didn’t see the match against Tsitsi, thank God, but I strongly suspect he lost because of his lack of fitness. What think you??? I feel his level of tennis is very good but fear he is going to be derailed by this loss of fitness…
Very happy for you GrandMA! πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ let the bragging commence!!
            Xxx

          • Hey hey hey amy!…Mira aka grandMA!…ohohohoho!!😁…my new nickname huh?hehe..

Bout Rafa…what to say huh?…There’s plenty to point out actually…tho not unusual imo…Boris Becker talking about it too…but i’m not surprised actually..i think Rafa effected heavily by current situation..he can’t practice the way he want/used to due to pandemic..and he needs to practice a lot to build his game & physical to the way before the covid started…lack of practice lead to lack of match fitness..and injury too…Rafa talking about how his body hurting very badly after he first started practice before season started last year..i think he still feeling the after effect of long lay off…and the usual culprit(doubt) crept in when he was struggling badly with his physical..i think that’s explain the extraordinary fell apart against Tsitsi…

But i also confident that Rafa will bounce back on clay later(not so sure bout grass,hc given his age now)…Let’s see..

          • So sorry to hear about the tennis injury AM. Am sending Clarissa over with some extra special healing gel. Worked wonders at the AO….;) See you in Holland. If only :'(

          • Hey hey hey M!…Ohh u wanna send Clarissa?hehehe…GRRREEAATTTT!!..Hopefully Clarissa will do wonders for me!πŸ˜πŸ‘

    • I respect Roger and Rafa and of course they are absolute legends. But I want to point out there was so much shitting on djokovic for β€˜faking’ his injury on this forum and the reality was the exact opposite. He had a muscle tear and fought through it!

So I hope the Rafa fans can see the hypocrisy in the assumptions they make about Djoko time and again. In any case results speak louder than words

      • He did NOT have a muscle “tear”! He did have some sort of minor strain and I don’t question that it affected his play in the earlier rounds. He did a great job of fighting through it. Believe me, no one with a tear could or would have performed his epic racket smash! (Unless of course you believe that drinking holy water and thinking pure thoughts cures muscle injuries, in which case we’ll have to agree to disagree).

        • He has officially come out on record and he was looked after by the ATP medical staff so there is NO WAY it was not a muscle tear unless you have a conspiracy theory that the ATP stuff are willing to propagate Djokovic’s ‘lie’ that it is a muscle tear.. And he is releasing a documentary later this year that will cover how he recovered
