Del Potro announces upcoming return in Delray Beach

Juan Martin Del Potro is coming back to the ATP Tour. On Wednesday, the oft-injured Argentine announced that he will play the Delray Beach Open, beginning in two weeks.

Plagued by a left-wrist issue, Del Potro missed the last nine months of 2014 before briefly returning to play Sydney and Miami in 2015. He has not played a match since round one of last year’s Miami Open (lost to Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 7-6(7)).

The 2009 U.S. Open champion peaked at No. 4 in the world before being undone by physical problems.

  1. does anyone know anything about the medical outcomes of this time of injury in terms of the long-term likelihood that his wrist could hold up??
i know that recurrent injuries tend to have negative outcomes but presumably with changes in technology and treatments available that could result in a more positive outlook..

    • amy, I’m sure he’s had the best treatments and medical care.

I used to follow him closely when he had the first surgery on his left wrist at Mao Clinic. By now, I’ve lost track. He’s had 3 surgeries on his left wrist and one on the right, I think. Need to verify that. Have had my doubts that he would be able to comeback and crack the forehand without further injury to his right wrist – because he has to hit it so hard – that’s his money forehand! The right wrist responded well. It’s the left wrist that has been the most difficult to repair and he’s had trouble getting power back to his two-handed backhand without tweaking the pain.

Long-term, sounds good for the right wrist. For the left wrist I don’t know. It may be something structurally interfering when he hits the ball. Too bad he can’t leave the left hand out of it, if that’s the case, and use a one-handed bh. I could never hit a double handed backhand without it feeling weird. It was a twinge of nerve pain. All my left arm is good for in tennis is a wobbly ball toss.

      • thanks rats! do you know of anyone who was able to transition successfully from a double handed shot to a single handed one because of injury issues?
must be very difficult but not impossible…
i love your new avatar btw! you are the tenngrand queen of avatars! although i did think that you short-changed nole a bit by giving him only one day while andy got 2…!

        • What happens is that I upload a photo but I can’t tell what it will look like until I post. If I don’t like how it looks, I can’t leave it 😀 The Nole picture was too dark – no pop to it. Andy’s photo with his cell phone was angelic 🙂

I don’t know of any pro’s transitioning. Maybe Dominic Thiem? For me it was no problem to switch. I hated the discomfort and awkwardness using both hands. DH BH is something that was pushed on me. SH BH was much better – not great, but when I connect, great. Otherwise, it’s run around to hit the forehand all day long.

          • i didn’t know thiem had switched from a two hander to a single one…how old was he when he did that? presumably beyond a certain age it’s well nigh impossible to re-programme…
            thiem is adorable…#bamos!!

          • I’d need to go look it up, amy. But I have been following him since juniors… read it or heard that Dom started with a DH and went to a SH on his coach or dad’s advice? He is adorable – and he’s edged inside the top 20 now.

amy, have you watched Quentin Halys? Bandwagon has already picked me up 😀

Oh yeah, I switched not long after starting – almost right away. And I was never going to play tennis at a high level. Much different for Delpo, I’d guess.

Watching Gasquet – another favorite. Gulbis lost the 1st set and is down a break in the 2nd.

          • i don’t think i have seen halys play? is he one to watch do you think?
who do you think of thiem, nick, zverev and so on..will come through??
i do like gasquet but he is maddening to watch in some ways…i wonder what would have happened with him without that cocaine ban and furore he went through? because he never seemed to regain the same momentum afterwards..or am i mis-remembering?? that’s always possible…!
i have a brand new dell and am having an utter nightmare with it..can’t get it to do anything but can’t face the dell helpline (fate worse than death…!)

          • AT 7:00 PM
—i wonder what would have happened with him without that cocaine ban and furore tum he went through?—
            ===
            .
            It lasted only 2 months.

          • so how long would you bet on it taking for them to make the break-through into winning masters/getting to masters finals; going deep in slams ricky??
who would you bet on being the best of the 3?? hope it’s thiem, as he is so loveable…

          • and it all depends on Djokovic. Given Djokovic’s dominance, it does not appear that anyone of them will do serious damage in the next three years.

          • amy @ 7 pm

Lot’s of interesting questions. Yes about Halys. I’d been noticing him move up the ranks but the first time watching him was A0. 2nd round Halys took a set off Nole! Then watched him again yesterday. Unfortunately he ran into a motivated appearing Gulbis.

Sascha Zverev v Cilic on now. Been thinking it will take Sascha some time to grow into his body and pull his best together – not likely this year! And I’d put Taylor Fritz in the same category. Halys, too, though he’s already 19. Halys’ game is beautiful. Such class already, too.

You never know about these guys. Sad that Nick had to pull out of Rotterdam – not sure what the problem was. Kokkinakis (has been my favorite) but he’s out injured, too. Right now I’d say 1) Thiem, 2) Coric, 3)Sock and Tomic.

Yeah Gasquet is another Frenchie with a beautiful game but he’s probably, like Berdych, not likely to pull a Wawa surprise.

          • yes i think nole is a roadblock in terms of anyone getting through. but however fit he is (i suppose fitter than anyone now) he surely has to get injured at some point and have time out giving others a chance…
i see both of you are in agreement about thiem..
his facebook posts should be incredible if so!

          • yeah, Stan’s is certainly more powerful. Gasquet’s may be more consistent. Stan definitely has the edge in that department.

          • no way gasquet does what stan did morphing into stanimal.
however beautiful his backhand there’s also a weakness with it with the backswing isn’t there?? and no way does he have stanimal’s raw power and ability to intimidate.
so you see thiem as having the best chance? even more so than nick, your favourite? nick’s problem is that he is a showman rather than a tennis player sometimes,or rather frequently, like monfils…
i’d forgotten about coric, you see him as second..
gonna mentally book-mark all this and hold you to account in the future!

          • Gasquet bh is not the weapon that Stanimal’s is! Nor will it ever be. The Gasquet forehand isn’t as strong as Stanimal’s either.

Oh no! Sascha is going balistic. Maybe why I hold back on him some – looks moody. He’s taken the 1st set from Cilic. Sasha has some swag!

You have to hold me accountable, lol – I get carried away.

          • Sascha saving how many BP’s? 4th…Bp saved like a boss!

Sorry this is a Delpo thread. It’s amy’s fault 😉

          • whaoah there…!! who was a willing participant!!
been ticked off once already today for unknowingly being on the wrong thread…
good catch about thiem..interesting that he was so ill and sickly as a teenager..

          • Just teasing. amy. (vaguely remember something about Sampras switching early on, too). The key is, the switch was done at a young age…like my story and that’s probably why I remember the stories when I read them.

            Delpo…it’s probably not an option.

Going to the Montpellier – Cilic v Zverev thread, amy. Match is compelling! Great fight – Sasha breaks back! TB to decide coming 6-6
Changed my mind. I love Sascha!
