In November, the Davis Cup will once again crown the best worldwide team in tennis. The Finals are scheduled to be held in Bologna, Italy. The Italians are the current title holders, fresh off two consecutive victories in recent editions.
The hosting nation will make its debut on Wednesday, November 19, in the quarterfinals against Austria. Will Sinner play in Bologna?
Italy’s success in recent years is due to the resurgence of national tennis, with a trio of great players who dominated the scene in the last years such as Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, and Lorenzo Musetti. Filippo Volandri, Italy’s captain, would be glad to have the world No. 2 at his disposal, but he knows that the player wants to be in top shape for the Australian Open and is evaluating a stop right after the ATP Finals–scheduled for the week before the Davis Cup clashes.
For now, it is quite probable that the players called by Volandri will be Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori for doubles, while the singles specialist will be Musetti and Flavio Cobolli. Sinner could close the team or–should he decline–Berrettini might take his place. The player from Rome, though, had some problems during the season and may not be fit enough to play in a tournament in which Italy expects to go all the way until the final–possibly against a Spanish team that may have Carlos Alcaraz among its players. The worst-case scenario for Italy is one in which neither Sinner nor Berrettini is available. In that case, the player called to close the roster would probably be Luciano Darderi.
The schedule
As usual, the schedule is pretty tight. In the quarterfinals, France will face Belgium; Spain will go head-to-head with Czechia; Argentina will play against Germany; Italy, as already written, is bound to play Austria. These matches will be held between November 18 and November 20. The semis are scheduled for Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st, while the final will be played on November 23 at 3:00 pm. Dates and times might still change. It will be a long weekend of great tennis and will hopefully feature the two best players in the world.
The tournament format
This year’s Davis Cup format goes back to the recent past. In 2024, the International Tennis Federation tried a new formula, experimenting with a group stage that didn’t convince anybody: not the players, not the audience, not even the same ITF…. For 2025, the format is very similar to what we were used to.
After two qualifying phases (in January and in September), the Final 8 begins in tournament format with the quarterfinals. Each team must win two out of three matches, with the third match being doubles if necessary. That adds a spicy variable to the matchup.
Thus, a tournament that has already seen some surprises during the qualifiers (Australia, the United States, and the Netherlands–last year’s finalist–have all been eliminated) goes back to a more familiar setting for its most important phase: the last one. The Davis Cup Finals are played in a quite busy moment, with the ATP Finals and the opulent Saudi exhibition of the Six Kings’ Slam very close, so players like Alcaraz or Sinner have to choose when to play. The Davis Cup won’t probably be their first choice.
