Citi Open preliminary list includes Medvedev, Tsitsipas, and Isner

The countdown to the ATP Tour’s return is on, and it stands at less than one month.

Following a five-month hiatus due to the coronavirus crisis, men’s professional tennis is set to officially return with next month’s Citi Open in Washington, D.C. Aside from multiple exhibitions that have been put on with varying degrees of success, tennis has been shelved since the February swings in the United States, Europe, South America, and Mexico. Indian Wells was the first tournament to be cancelled and almost every other tournament through July also got the axe.

Only the French Open has survived, postponed from late May and early June to late September and early October.

But we won’t have to wait until the modified clay-court season in Madrid, Rome, and at Roland Garros to see tennis. An abbreviated American hard-court swing begins in Washington, D.C. before both the Western & Southern Open (previously in Cincinnati) and U.S. Open are held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.

Although there will be no fans at any of those hard-court events, Citi Open chairman Mark Ein sees this as a huge opportunity.

“It won’t just be the eyes of Washington, or the tennis world, but the entire sports world will be tuned in to see what happens in our city as tennis comes back on the world stage,” Ein said last month. “It’s a great honor, but it’s also a great responsibility.

“We’ve put a huge amount of time and effort into collaborating with world class health experts to put in a series of protocols and a framework that is going to keep the players healthy and safe while they’re here. And that’s what’s enabled us to have the confidence that we can host this event.”

It could be a great event, too–if not to see in person than at least to watch on TV. As usual, the Citi Open boasts an outstanding entry list. The preliminary lineup of players was announced earlier this week and it will likely become official this coming Monday.

Top-10 players Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas headline the field along with John Isner, Kei Nishikori, Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin, Karen Khachanov, Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Milos Raonic, Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur, and Borna Coric.

16 Comments on Citi Open preliminary list includes Medvedev, Tsitsipas, and Isner

    • Seems like more or less the usual suspects for the Citi Open. Andy Murray’s not on the list though…and what’s Delpo’s status these days?

    • A big if, imo. Also, how are the US players going to get to Europe for the delayed clay court swing? I don’t see Americans being welcome in most of the world until Trump gets booted out and someone actually starts implementing public policy that isn’t insane. Maybe Europe will make exceptions for pro tennis players?

      • All too true, but few US players are going to cry too hard about missing the Euro clay court events, are they? Well, we’ll know more in a month or so. In the meanwhile, stay well, folks and wear your masks.

    • Sometimes less is more. 🙂 Don’t think NK is interested in visiting covid central this year. He doesn’t care for clay either so you’ll have to be satisfied reading his tweets.

  1. Alas. First of the dominoes to fall? Looks like the Non-USA athletes will need some kind of guarantee they can get to Europe in time for the fall clay season.

  2. With Covid cases surging in Spain, the whole fall clay court season is looking unlikely. France has already told its citizens not to travel to border regions and may close the border. But what we’ve seen is by the time a government enforces those restrictions it’s usually too late. Expect a second European wave over the next few months.
