It is quarterfinal Sunday in Chengdu, where seeds Denis Shapovalov and Hubert Hurkacz are on the order of play. They are set for respective showdowns against Adrian Mannarino and qualifier Lloyd Harris.
Adrian Mannarino vs. (7) Denis Shapovalov
It will be an all-lefty showdown when Shapovalov and Mannarino square off for the fifth time in their careers in the Chengdu Open quarterfinals on Sunday. Shapovalov improved to 3-1 lifetime in the head-to-head series with a 6-1, 6-4 rout at the Cincinnati Masters this summer. The Canadian has won all three of their previous outdoor hard-court contests, as Mannarino’s lone victory has come indoors in Basel (2017).
Shapovalov booked his spot in the last eight by defeating Tallon Griekspoor and Vit Kopriva in straight sets. Thus continues a decent stretch for the world No. 50, who finished runner-up in Los Cabos to begin the hard-court summer and reached the U.S. Open third round. Mannarino’s week features wins over Jerry Shang and Alejandro Tabilo, also in straight sets. Unfortunately for the 38-year-old Frenchman, he has not reached a semifinal on an outdoor hard court since lifting the Winston-Salem trophy in 2022.
Pick: Shapovalov in 2
(Q) Lloyd Harris vs. (5) Hubert Hurkacz
Hurkacz is finally into his first ATP quarterfinal of the season following wins this week over Alexander Shevchenko and Martin Damm. The 46th-ranked Pole trailed Damm by a set on Saturday but used one break in each of the last two sets to advance. Even though this is Hurkacz’s first quarterfinal appearance on the main tour, it’s not like he has been playing bad tennis. The 29-year-old has now advanced at least one round in seven consecutive events, pushed eventual runner-up Ben Shelton to 7-5 in the fourth set at the U.S. Open, and won the Cancun Challenger this summer.
Up next for Hurkacz on Sunday is a third showdown against Harris, with the head-to-head series tied 1-1. Harris prevailed 6-4, 7-6(5) on the red clay of the Lisbon Challenger nine years ago before Hurkacz scored a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory at the 2022 Miami Masters. Harris, who has been even more injury plagued than Hurkacz in recent seasons, had been just 1-1 at the ATP level in 2026 prior to arriving in Chengdu. It has already been a fantastic week for the 136th-ranked South African, who successfully qualified and then ousted Aleksandar Kovacevic and Valentin Vacherot. If Hurkacz’s return game (five service breaks through two rounds) continues to excel, he should have a slight edge in this one.
Pick: Hurkacz in 3
