Ignacio Buse captured the second ATP title of his career and also his second of the season when he defeated Wimbledon semifinalist Arthur Fery 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Winston-Salem Open on Sunday afternoon.
Buse faced only one break point — which he lost — and broke Fery four times while coasting to victory in one hour and 11 minutes. The 22-year-old Peruvian, who previously lifted a trophy at the Hamburg ATP 500 this spring, climbs to a best-ever ranking of No. 30 in the world.
“It is very special for me,” Buse said during an on-court interview. “With all my team, we have been working very, very hard. Some things are very tough that we go through as tennis players. I also want to congratulate Arthur and his team.”
Buse and Fery now head to New York for the U.S. Open. Both players have the good fortune of landing in the top half of the draw, meaning they do not have to play until Tuesday. Buse will kick off his campaign against Marcos Giron, while Fery faces Lorenzo Musetti.
