In perhaps the most shocking scoreline of the year so far, Matteo Berrettini double-bageled Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in round two of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday afternoon. Berrettini needed a mere 49 minutes to advance.
“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” the Italian assessed. “I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.
“I faced two break points in the first game and then after that it felt I was playing better than him. I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing.”
Amazingly, Berrettini has not dropped a single game all week. The 29-year-old led Roberto Bautista Agut 4-0 in round one when the Spaniard retired.
Medvedev is just the fifth top-10 player since the ATP rankings began in 1973 to be on the losing end of a double-bagel. It last happened at the 2016 Rome Maters, where David Goffin gave Tomas Berdych 6-0, 6-0 treatment. The Russian is the first former world No. 1 to get double-bageled in a tour-level match since Jimmy Connors lost to Ivan Lendl 6-0, 6-0 in the 1984 Forest Hills semifinals.

Hard to believe because Med has had a pretty good year.
Sometimes everyone has a crap day. Nothing feels right. I’m amazed it doesn’t happen more often in tennis. They must catch stomach bugs etc too. All that travel.
