Quarterfinal spots will start being handed out in Bastad on Wednesday, when Grigor Dimitrov continues his campaign against No. 5 seed Nuno Borges. No. 2 seed Luciano Darderi is going up against Daniel Altmaier in the second round.

(5) Nuno Borges vs. (WC) Grigor Dimitrov

Borges and Dimitrov will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they clash in round two of the Nordea Open on Wednesday. They split their two previous encounters; Borges prevailed 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(6) at the 2024 Australian Open before Dimitrov got the job done 6-3, 6-4 last spring in Indian Wells.

Both players head into this showdown with some momentum. Borges, the 2024 Bastad champion, upped his 2026 victory total to 17 with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Moise Kouame on Tuesday. On the heels of a rough 12 months, Dimitrov finally had something to enjoy at the All-England Club — where he advanced to the fourth round with wins over Jakub Mensik and Matteo Berrettini. The 146th-ranked Bulgarian scraped past Dalibor Svrcina 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-4 in round one. Borges is a considerable step up in competition and no days off following a tough opening match is not ideal for the 35-year-old.

Daniel Altmaier vs. (2) Luciano Darderi

Darderi has cooled off since making a semifinal run at the Rome Masters, but being the defending champ in Bastad should give him more than enough confidence for this week. The 18th-ranked Italian was on fire last summer, when he went back-to-back in Bastad and Umag and then — after the U.S. Open — won a Challenger title on the clay courts of Genoa.

Following a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed, Darderi will go up against Altmaier for the fourth time on Wednesday. Altmaier leads the head-to-head series 2-1 (all on clay), but they have not faced each other since 2024. The 60th-ranked German has gotten on track since a disastrous start to the year, but he is still just 11-19 on the main tour in 2026 after beating Hugo Gaston 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday. This should be a good one, with a slight edge going to Darderi at a venue where you know he feels comfortable.
