Tuesday’s order of play in Basel is covering all ends of the spectrum, including 19-year-old Joao Fonseca and 40-year-old Stan Wawrinka. Fonseca opens with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, while Wawrinka meets Miomir Kecmanovic.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard vs. Joao Fonseca
Mpetshi Perricard probably figured he would be seeded at the 2025 Swiss Indoors Basel when he lifted the trophy at this tournament 12 months ago. However, an underwhelming season means he goes into his title defense as an unseeded floater. Although Mpetshi Perricard has not played great this year, he can never be discounted on indoor hard courts. The world No. 33 beat Felix Auger-Aliassime, Holger Rune, and Ben Shelton at this event in 2024, plus he is coming off a semifinal performance last week in Stockholm.
Up first for Mpetshi Perricard on Tuesday is a first-ever showdown against Fonseca. The 46th-ranked Brazilian came out of the 2025 gates like gangbusters but has cooled off throughout the second half. Outside of team competitions, Fonseca is just 3-5 in his last eight matches dating back to Wimbledon. He is also much less experienced than Mpetshi Perricard on this surface, so the big-serving Frenchman should have the edge.

Miomir Kecamanovic vs. (WC) Stan Wawrinka
You never know when Wawrinka’s next appearance in front of the home fans in Basel will be his last one, but this one certainly could be it. The three-time Grand Slam champion is 40 years old and has struggled mightily to win matches on the main tour really since this tournament 12 months ago–when he defeated Adrian Mannarino before losing to Shelton, the eventual runner-up. Wawrinka has picked up only two ATP-level wins since then; his record for the 2025 campaign stands at a horrendous 2-11.
The former world No. 3 will try to earn a rare main-tour victory when he faces Kecmanovic for the second time on Tuesday. Their only previous encounter came at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters, where Wawrinka prevailed 7-6(8), 6-4. Although Kecmanovic is a massive favorite to get revenge, that has little to do with his own form. The 52nd-ranked Serb is a modest 21-25 this year and coming off a three-set loss to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the Stockholm second round. Still, Kecmanovic is a rock-solid baseliner who will make Wawrinka work–and probably too hard, in fact.
