Tournament favorite Daniil Medvedev will take on Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime for a spot in the Australian Open semifinals on Wednesday.

If you want to understand the matchup between Daniil Medvedev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, you need look no further than a couple weeks ago at the ATP Cup in Sydney. The Australian Open’s No. 2 seed and the No. 9 seed met in the semifinals of the team event. Medvedev handed Auger-Aliassime a proper shellacking, complete with a bagel (6-4, 6-0).

With a week and a half of matches under his belt, Auger-Aliassime should put in a better performance than he did in Sydney — but Medvedev has also had basically the same amount of time on court to shake off the offseason rust.

The Canadian has had to work hard for his spot in the quarters this fortnight. Only his third round against Dan Evans was straightforward. Otherwise he was challenged by each of Emil Ruusuvuori, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Marin Cilic.

Medvedev has been more dominant. Nick Kyrgios nabbed a set in the second round, but there was never any real danger of the Russian losing that match. The only player to have pushed Medvedev’s buttons was the young American Maxime Cressy in the fourth round.

This has proven to be a poor matchup for Auger-Aliassime. He has only managed to take one set in three matches with Medvedev so far. On this court, where Medvedev plays so well, it’s hard to imagine the underdog turning the tide.

  1. I didn’t realize that Felix had match point. Wow! That has to be disappointing. But he will get valuable experience and know that he was snake to compete with the best player ruggt now.m

  2. I was reading the ATP stats board today.
Based on stats Med ought to beat Tsitsi. They are similar on serve but Med is #4 on the return list while Tsitsi is #24 (quoting from memory so might be slightly out but you get the picture!). Berrettini is way way down the return list. He is about #70!
I still say that given how long he has been out and how little training time he had Rafa has to be aggressive and get it done in 3/4. He can’t get into long matches now.

    • ROS certainly separates the sheep from the goats. If I see an up and coming player with a good ROS I wake up and take notice.
The blood sucking leech clings on and on doesn’t he? As David Davis said…OMG I’m agreeing with deadwoood Davis! BJ I’m talking about here, in case anyone, not Amy obviously, is wondering WTH I’m talking about!

      • If we are agreeing with David Davis we are really in trouble Margot!
The blood sucking leech will be prised from his rock eventually!
A great ROS is very rare! I was a bit surprised Tsitsi was quite so low on the list…of course Andy at his best was second only to Novax.
I really really wish we didn’t have to listen to the leech go on about Ukraine ( he is Russian compromised as hell anyway!) We know he doesn’t give a damn and I am honestly in despair at how Europe has treated Ukraine…

  3. Am so happy to see Barty in the final. I really want her to win. Very pleased for Collins who has battled through a lot. Swiatek will come into her own once the clay season starts.
And although she lost today it’s great to see Keys back in the mix; she had some great wins.
I really like the variety and craft in Barty’s game and she is so dignified and likeable.

    • Love, love, love Barty! Beautiful human being, beautiful player.
We are a complete irrelevance on the world stage, yet rahring Tory scum can’t accept that!

      • Yes I love her too! Really hope she wins tomorrow.
Now they’re tremendously tremendously upset about the NI Protocol which they negotiated and signed! Who would have thought it?
What moral authority do they have to lecture other countries about lies and propaganda when they vomit then up on an hourly basis?!
        Go Ash!!πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’›πŸ’›

      • She might if Ash gets nervous as she is an incredible fighter. But I still think Ash will win in the end.
I like Collins a lot as well and wish her all the best for the rest of the year..
