Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Rome Masters and the French Open on Friday as a result of the wrist injury that he suffered earlier in the clay-court swing.
“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to court,” Alcaraz posted on social media. “This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger.”
The second-ranked Spaniard would have been the two-time defending champion at Roland Garros. He won five-set finals against Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
Alcaraz kicked off this year’s clay-court season with a runner-up performance in Monte-Carlo (lost to Sinner). He advanced one round in Barcelona before withdrawing because of the wrist issue.

Maybe it’s mild and will heal up OK. But there’s always that possibility of chronic injury. In Alcaraz’s favour is that he doesn’t just play cannonball tennis but uses all-round skills and varied speeds, so that should in theory reduce his wrist/elbow/shoulder injury risk a bit. It’s also in his favour that he takes time off to heal properly instead of playing through it like Taylor Fritz has done with his knee forever.
Oh no!!! Without Alcaraz it’s going to be very dull. I find the ATP a huge snore now with the only compensation being Sincaraz. If Jannik were to get sick/ be injured would be boring beyond belief.
If he’s missing RG good chance he won’t be a factor for wimby. Maybe won’t play there either😡😥

I get why you mightn’t enjoy watching Zverev. He looks and sounds like he’s having root canal therapy when he’s playing. But there’s so much fantastic depth and new talent on the ATP tour now compared to the Big Three era. Some of the best tennis Ive seen this century has been in matches that weren’t with the Top Two. Like Tommy Paul had a match, I can’t remember who he played but wow. Several matches actually. Ben Shelton played fabulous tennis last tournament. Learner Tien, Sebastian Korda are reliably great to watch. Raphael Collignon during Davis Cup floored me, brilliant. Zizou Bergs too. I could name dozens of “wow” ATP matches without Sinner or Alcaraz this year. Plus the new kids; Jodar blew de Minaur out of the water last night.🔥

The most annoying thing about him seems to be his ditzy “influencer” girlfriend, who for instance judged Vegemite after eating it *by the spoonful*. That’s not how it’s supposed to be eaten. I don’t like Vegemite personally (except under melted cheese on toast sometimes) but that’s a really stupid, didn’t-bother-reading-the-instructions thing to do, which made her no friends in Australia. Let’s hope she never has to work out how to use a parachute or a defibrillator.
A poster called Elizabeth named him Cart Horse! I was watching him a few years ago on clay and he was being utterly dreadful so I wrote a post saying Fritz is playing like a cart horse…! Elizabeth wrote back: thanks for the laughs amy, Cart Horse is perfect for him. So he became the Cart Horse….

The player I see as potentially most profiting from no Alcaraz is Djokovic. Very hard to see him beating both Sinner and Alcaraz at Rg and wimby. But he could win if he only has to beat Sinner. ( depending on his fitness of course…) Besides Sinner has some off matches like last wimby against Dimi. It’s not an absolute given he gets to the final…
I actually hadn’t thought about that yet because Djokovic is currently rehabbing an injury but that is a big opportunity for him all right if he can play the upcoming slams.
I saw a Guardian article suggesting Alcaraz was overscheduled and had the same problem last year. Perhaps he could take a leaf out of Djokovic’s book.
