Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Wednesday because of a right wrist injury.

The second-ranked Spaniard took a medical timeout following the first set against Otto Virtnanen on Tuesday but did not look to be seriously impacted by it on his way to a 6-4, 6-2 opening-round victory. However, Alcaraz underwent a test on Tuesday morning and then decided to withdraw.

Alcaraz was coming off a runner-up performance in Monte-Carlo, where he lost both the final and the No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner. The 22-year-old would have regained the top spot — at least temporarily — with a title in Barcelona. He fell to Holger Rune in last year’s Barcelona final.

Tomas Machac gets a walkover to the quarterfinals as a result of Alcaraz’s exit.
