The leg injury that Carlos Alcaraz dealt with during his Nitto ATP Finals loss to Jannik Sinner will sideline the Spaniard from this week’s Davis Cup competition.
Alcaraz made the announcement via social media on Tuesday morning.
“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,” Alcaraz posted on Twitter. “I have edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I have always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is and I was really looking forward to helping fight for the Salad Bowl [trophy]. I am going home hurt….”
The Davis Cup Finals are taking place Tuesday through Sunday. Spain’s quarterfinal contest against Czech is set for Thursday, and Alcaraz’s team is certainly an underdog without him on the court. A roster of Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, and Pablo Carreno Busta is facing a Czech squad that boasts Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik, and Tomas Machac.
Two-time defending champion Italy is without Sinner, but it is still among the favorites with Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini, and the doubles duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Alcaraz ends his year at No. 1 in the world. His match record of 71-9 featured eight titles, including two Grand Slams at the French Open and U.S. Open.
