No. 1 with a bullet.
Jannik Sinner surged to the top ranking in the world in 2024 and he looks poised to stay there for a long time after capping off a dominant season with a perfect run through the Nitto ATP Finals. Sinner triumphed in front of the home crowd inside Turin’s Inalpi Arena by beating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match on Sunday evening.
The 23-year-old need just one break in each set to defeat Fritz by the exact same scoreline that took place when they met in Group Ilie Nastase on Tuesday. Those came at 3-3 in the opening set and at 2-2 in the second. Fritz generated only one break point, which went by the wayside with his opponent serving for the first set at 5-4.
Sinner did not drop a set all week long, compiling a 3-0 record in his round-robin group (d. Fritz, Alex de Minaur, and Daniil Medvedev) before erasing Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-2 in the semis.
He finishes the year with 11,830 ranking points. That’s at least 3,915 points more than every other player (Alexander Zverev is No. 2 at 7,915). Fritz, who also finished runner-up to Sinner at the U.S. Open, will climb to a career high of No. 4 in the world on Monday.
“It’s amazing; it’s my first title in Italy and it means so much to me,” Sinner assured. “It’s something very special. I just tried to understand what works best for each opponent, trying to play my best possible tennis. That was the key.
“It was a very high level tournament from my side. At times I couldn’t have played better, so I am very happy.”
too good
Exactly, well Fritz didn’t do anything much wrong, Sinner was just that bit better in the important points 🎾🤗
