Alex de Minaur extend an incredible streak of games won to 18 in a row when he took the first set off fellow Australian Jordan Thompson during their U.S. Open fourth-round match on Monday evening.
De Minaur, who ended up prevailing 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, previously won the last 12 games of his third-round contest against Dan Evans on Saturday. The world No. 10 double-bageled a less-than-100-percent Evans in the final two sets, finishing off a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-0 victory in style.
“I can’t say I remember if I’ve ever done that, but yeah, obviously I got off to a good start today,” De Minaur said after defeating Thompson. “But the funny thing about winning sets 6-0, I don’t think it’s the best thing in the world–because I feel like there’s a bit more added pressure and your opponent just relaxes a little bit more.
“But yeah, again, I couldn’t have asked for a better start today and I think it was important. Yeah, (I) can’t remember the last time I won 18 games in a row.”
The 25-year-old is now into the quarterfinals at a third consecutive Grand Slam, having also reached this stage at the French Open (lost to Alexander Zverev) and Wimbledon (withdrew against Novak Djokovic). He will battle Jack Draper for a spot in the semis on Wednesday.
