Nitto ATP Finals round-robin preview and prediction: Medvedev vs. Zverev

Either Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev will take control of the Red Group at the Nitto ATP Finals when they square off in the round-robin winners’ match on Wednesday.

Medvedev looked especially impressive in his Turin opener, as he destroyed fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-2. Success at the year-end championship is nothing new for Medvedev, who won the title in 2020 and finished runner-up to none other than Zverev in 2021.

That result temporarily tied their head-to-head series at 6-6, but Medvedev has mostly dominated the matchup in 2023. The world No. 3 has won four of their five meetings this season to seize a 10-7 advantage. He prevailed in three-set thrillers in Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo, cruised in straight sets in Rome, lost in three in Cincinnati, and most recently scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the Beijing semifinals.

Zverev has enjoyed even more success than Medvedev at the Nitto ATP Finals. The 26-year-old German’s triumph in 2021 was his second, having previously lifted the trophy in 2018 (upset Novak Djokovic in the final). Zverev cooled off this fall following a title in Chengdu, but he managed to overcome Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 on Monday.

Somewhat predictably, the Zverev-Alcaraz contest was not of the highest quality. Zverev hasn’t been great over the past month and Alcaraz is in a serious funk, complete with some recent physical issues (foot and back). Moreover, Zverev would probably prefer slower conditions whereas Medvedev absolutely loves this ice rink kind of surface.

Look for the No. 3 seed to take care of business and improve his Turin record to 2-0.

Pick: Medvedev in 2
