2014 Davis Cup draw revealed

The 2014 Davis Cup draw for the World Group as well as some of the zones was held on Wednesday morning in London. A Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer matchup is possible in the first round with current finalist Serbia set to host Switzerland. Federer generally suits up only to save Switzerland from relegation, but the visitors will obviously need Federer in order to have any chance on the road against the 2010 Davis Cup champions.

At the top of the bracket, the Czech Republic–which won it all in 2012 and is facing Serbia in November’s final–will host the Netherlands. The winner of that tie will go up against either Canada or Japan. Potential semifinal matchups in the top half of the draw are the Czech Republic vs. either Spain or Canada. Spain will travel to Germany in February while France will host Australia. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has already confirmed his participation, health permitting.

The Serbia-Switzerland winner will advance to the quarterfinals to do battle with either Kazakhstan or Belgium. Rounding out the bottom half are the United States, Great Britain, Argentina, and Italy. Team USA is hosting a British squad that was led last weekend by Andy Murray over Croatia and into the World Group. Argentina, a real force whenever its full squad is on board, has home-court advantage against the Italians.

Serbia is hosting this year’s title tie after edging visiting Canada 3-2 last weekend. The Czech Republic rolled at home over a depleted Argentine squad.
