  1. The big serving teen from Gulbis hometown, Riga, Latvia, gets the 1st set 7-5. Some excellent energy and ball-striking from Petkovic to start the set but it all went downhill due to wear and tear, it appeared. After a MTO, and assessing the problem, Andrea is no better; still having trouble with a left thigh, effecting serve and movement. She retires.

Ostapenko is the winner. Huge accomplishment for Jelena Ostapenko and in making the final in Doha she will be into the top 40 on Monday. If Ostapenko should somehow win over #11 ranked Carla Suarez-Navarro, Ostapenko will be close to or at #30!

For Carla, runner-up in the final will take her back solidly into the top ten at #6; the win puts her closer to #5, Garbine Muguruza, but not higher than #6.

Go Jelena Ostapenko, win Doha, and get seeded for Indian Wells and Miami! .

      • I know. It was very difficult for her to have to give up, hawk. She appeared to be making good progress recently. Such an impressive run in Doha with wins over: Makarova, Gasparyan, Vandeweghe, and Mugu! Thought she’d make the final.

Kei is the same – one of my faves but so many injury set-backs. Can’t stand watching him lose.

        Get better soon Andrea!

  2. Thinking about sending Tennis Channel a polite but elaborate email.

Split screen coverage when two important finals are on at the same time could be improved – couldn’t it?

Doha contest for 900 ranking points:
Carla Suarez-Navarro and Jelena Ostapenko are not disappointing! A set apiece. Going to the wire this one. Gosh me loving the contrasting styles.

  3. Ostapenko has a nice 1st serve. And she needs to hit it in because the second serve isn’t quite there yet. Ostapenko can’t consolidate her early break in the decider and CSN gets the break.
2-1 Ostapenko 3rd set but CSN serving to get it back on serve. 15-15. 30-15. 40-15. 40-30. 2-2 Carla dodges a bullet.
    Ostapenko serving ahead at 2-2.

  4. shoot! Ostapenko lost serve. Carla’s got the break 3-2.
Not that I don’t love Carla but I wanted Ostapenko to get seeded for IW.

  5. JelenaO held but it wasn’t easy. So far it looks like Jelena is not as good when serving from behind.
    4-3 Carla serving. 30-30. 40-30. 5-3.

Jelena serving to stay in the match. Not sure she can do it. She needs a her strong 1st serve going in. Carla is defensively superior.
    30-0. 40-0. Jelena holds! She’s tough.

Go Marcos Baghdatis – get the set!

5-4. Carla serving for the match. 15-0. 15-15. 30-15. 30-30! 40-30 match point. 40-40! deuce! Ad In. GSM Carla – biggest win in her career!! Happiness team CSN, ah.

But wow – love the young Lativian’s tennis. Congrats to both!
Still like Aga v Roberta match better this week but this final was up there. πŸ™‚

  6. Unbelievable run when I think about it for Jelena Ostapenko this week. Her path to the final was immense. Her surprsing win over Carla Suarez-Navarro last Wimbledon was no fluke. Some Rafa fans here might be interested to know that the Canary Island native sought help from a sports psychologist. Looks like it’s paying off – she was devastated by the Wimbledon loss to the surprising, powerful Ostapenko, who had just turned 18.

Carla Suarez-Navarro will be #6, right behind her doubles partner Garbine Muguruza. What Champions – Carla and Garbine – Vamos!

Jelena Ostapenko will rise to inside the top 40 – just shy of seeding, I think for IW. Will be in qualifying?

  7. Spring temperatures coming early, I went for a bike ride, Doha final on my mind, Led Zepplin album 4 blasting in my ears, I recalled being a young elementry school girl, dreaming of Olympic medals in my favorite sport at the time, downhill ski racing.

If I was 18, and had just beaten GS champions, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Petra Kvitova, (pretty sure I wouldn’t count Petkovic because she was clearly injured), made the final of a 900 point tournament, came very close to winning it by beating another top 10 player, hit I forget how many winners and 9 aces, I’d be bursting with energy and determination. It’s an Olympic year and I’m from a small, Eastern European country. I’m going to make them proud: train hard, train smart, be calculating and time it right — not goof around, very little social media, and no boyz. I’d put up my posters of (Ernests? really?), and definitely, Serena, watch my diet carefully…on and on. It’s an opportunity of a life-time you just don’t miss. Shoot for the medal rounds, choose your color, Jelena-O!

  8. Many of the same names that were in Acapulco are in Monterrey, I see. Tennis Channel schedule says there will be a broadcast by Wednesday but not can’t tell if it will be live – should be – but can’t count on it. Kuala Lumpur – no TC coverage. Vinci, Bouchard, Svitolina, and Lisicki are seeds to watch in Kuala Lumpur.

In Monterrey, Nicole Gibbs made it through qualifying. Matches I’ll be keeping my eye on:
Danka Kovinic v Nicole Gibbs – Go Gibbsy!
Christina McHale v Victoria Rodriguez (watched Rodriguez in Acapulco last week)
    Monica Puig v Marcela Zacarias
    Caroline Wozniaki v Olga Govortova

  9. Kuala Lumpur Winner: Elina Svitolina over Eugenie Bouchard, 7(7) 6(5) 64 75.

Congrats to Elina Svitolina and runner-up Eugenie Bouchard! Svitolina has been on fire on 2016. The 20 year old, Ukrainian will receive 280 ranking points and move ahead of Timea Baczsinzsky to #14. Eugenie Bouchard gets 180 ranking points and moves from #52 to about 42 right behind Jelena Ostapenko.

Great to see Genie winning matches again.

Kristen Flipkens will face Heather Watson in the Monterrey final at 4:00 pm EST.

  10. Virtual wager game on ?

odds on Sharapova announcement: new Sugarpova flavor (1 to 1), endorsement of Trump (5 to 1), dating Del Potro (20 to 1), retiring (75 to 1)

  11. Heather Watson wins Monterrey! 36 62 63 over Kirsten Flipkins. Congrat to both winner and runner-up.

Same points on offer as Kuala Lumpur so 280 points added to Heather’s total will take her from #84 to around #53-52, nice jump! Veteran, Kristin will move from #73 to around # 55.

Good luck to all at Indian Wells. Can’t wait!

  12. Bummed that Jelena Ostapenko teenage star and runner-up in Doha isn’t included in the Indian Wells Draw. Hopefully she’ll be in Miami? Otherwise, a great draw.

    Top Half Highlights
Serena v Errani; Venus v Halep. Then, Serena v Venus QF. An Indian Wells first!
    A.Radwanksa v Kvitova QF.
But Aga has the worst Draw. Cibulkova, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Kvitova (this isn’t Petra’s favorite event). Would not be surprised if both Aga and Petra go out early.

Bottom Half is so much fun.
Bencic v Dasha, Svitolina v Vinci, Vika v Woz, Stosur v Muguruza, Suarez-Navarro v Darling Daria Kasatkina, Stephens v Bacszinsky, Ivanovic v Pliskova, Kerber v Konta!

Vinci v Vika QF and Kerber v Suarez-Navarro QF.

It could all go very differently – that’s WTA!

Monica Puig (Pur) v Marjana Duque-Marino (Col)

    After 7:00 pm
Eugenie Bouchard (Can) v Risa Ozaki (Jpn)

    And it gets better tomorrow…

    • Argh…and not that anyone might know or notice, but it’s my wishful thinking for Monica Puig and Duque-Marino lol

Monica Puig from Puerto Rico will play veteran, Marjana Lucic-Baroni from Croatia — also a good match — as is any match involving Monica Puig πŸ˜‰

    • Thanks nadline, I’d read that and watched Nole’s presser – which made more sense than the reading that transcript. Not impressed with what he says other than reserving judgement. My own opinion is that I find her story incredible, as in unbelievable incredible, on several levels but I’m waiting for more information and discovery.

Have to say, if I was an athlete on the tour, I’d be like Belinda Bencic:
Belinda Bencic: “I opened that email [from WADA] at the end of December. We all got an email. … I look at the list, especially when I’m feeling a little bit sickly, and check and look what is inside there and see if it’s not forbidden.”

I’d have opened the WADA attachment immediately and kept it bookmarked, print it off, had my team looking into it too, ect. Like Belinda says, “you keep it handy in case you do get sick and need something.” Also, if I’m taking something as needed, had a standing order for it at a pharmacy, or took it regularly, no matter how long I’d been taking it, it would be common sense to check the WADA list each time it’s updated. That’s one of the parts of her story I question. There are a couple others.

Andy Murray’s response makes sense, too.

    • Nole is definitely struggling in the interview. He’s caught in two minds. But I think that I’ll stop there. Or, if I comment, will comment on Nole’s page. I’m really done with Sharapova until time passes and see meore.

      • The other #fail IMO is that they should have announced WHEN the length of her suspension would be announced which they still haven’t done.

Also, they should have announced it immediately instead of giving her the opportunity to do it herself and keeping it a secret days in advance.

        • Hawkie, I’m gonna post a link to a documentary here that I watched this morning. The documentary was made in Germany and aired on March 6 …I think it may have had something to do with Maria’s announcement timing. If not, it’s sure a big coincidence.

I’ll try to post the video …but my posts are not going through today … kinda strange.

  15. WTA today looks good. My top 3: Ana v Camila, Vika v Diyas and Carla Suarez-Navarro v Kasatkina.

If I was at IW, I’d have a day pass — and start with Stadium 6, for Roberta Vinci’s match. Then, leave that one early for Stadium 4 — to find a good seat for the Kyrgios v Ramos match — perhaps not stay the whole match there because Stadium 3 is where I’d want to be for the last two day session matches: Vika v Diyas and Goffin v Tiafoe!

    Stadium 1 – Day Session
    Kerber v Allertova
    Stephens v Bouchard
    Evening Session
    Ivanovic v Giorgi

    Stadium 2
    Muguruza v McHale

    Stadium 3
    Bencic v Davis
    Azarenka v Diyas

    Stadium 4 11:00 am
    Konta v Brengle
    Pliskova v Rogers
    6:00 pm
    Wozniaki v Zhang

    Stadium 5
    Bacsinszky v Pironkova
    Stosur v Wickmayer

    Stadium 6
    Vinci v Gasparyan
    Suarez-Navarro v Kasatkina

    Stadium 7
    Puig v Schmiedlova

    Stadium 9
    Gavrilova v Rybarikova
    Svitolina v Beck
