  1. Well, Simona appears geared up and ready for a run at US Open. Looking forward to the semi-final with Kerber tomorrow.

Not Aga’s night. She had the shots, they just weren’t going in.

  2. Saturday Semi Picks:
Muguruza over Pliskova — hoping for 3 sets but I think Mugu in 2.
Halep over Kerber in 3. Kerber is looking tired but who knows!

  3. Go Halep!!!

Agreed rc what difference a great coach like Killer Cahill can make.

Once Halep got past her injury it’s just been a matter of time.

    • Cahill is a great tennis commentator and analyst and also a great coach. Halep is fortunate to have him in her corner.

      • Oh for heaven’s sake! Rafa did not fail! After coming back from over two months off with no match play and just some practice?

You have to be kidding with that! Rafa did incredibly well to get another gold medal in doubles and get to the semis of singjes!

I don’t get this need to quantify things in terms of “failing”! Rafa competed at the Olympics! That was his victory!

Cahill has helped Halep as her coach. One lost match does not make him a failure, nor does it make any other coach a failure!

  4. LOL…I sure got my Cincy semifinal picks backwards!
Duty called today, so I missed the tennis. Now I’ll cheer for Kerber to reach #1. Go Angie!

Very cool that Karolina Pliskova made the final, too. Have to watch highlights and see what happened to Muguruza.

New Haven qualifying started I see. Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, Madison Keys, Roberta Vinci, Timea Bacsinszky, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, and Barbora Strycova are seeds. Draw looks good:

    • I guess kerber wasn’t that tired! So now she will have a shot at # 1 if she wins. I thought Mugu would get to the final.

      • Many of us fell for it again, Nny. The tired thing. Andy and Angie too tired to make it after Rio, right…

Hello to Alison Hodge if you are reading! πŸ™‚ ?

  5. Hi Ratcliff, back from my break, and havent seen much tennis, and im still on Olympic mode ATM, only heard when i got back Andy won a singles gold, and Rafa one in doubles, so happy about that, why both played Cincy i dont know, hope Novak is fit for the USO, heard theres some bother with the wrist, which could be why he lost to Delpo at the Olys, although Deplo hits hard and can trouble the very best when he puts his mind to it, sensible decision pulling out of Cincy, not heard anymore about the injury though since ….

    • Nice to read you Alison!
So, you didn’t watch Olympic tennis? I watched the women’s semi’s and gold medal final. Kerber I think was fine physically but – everyone boiled it down to saying she was tired, even me. When I watched the replay I think it is tired but it’s not quite as simple as only tired. Nerves can make you make mistakes, make your limbs weak. Your mind knows what to do but you can’t make shots you normally would. Angie played so well here in Cincy – each match getting better until this final. She had that Gold medal on her racquet vs Monica Puig but Monica was swinging freely, playing with no fear and far less of the bad stress that makes you weak.

Pliskova is in Monica Puig mode. Gosh we all deal with pressure differently. Feeling sorry for Kerber – she says she’s not thinking about being WTA #1 but that’s probably not realistic. On the other side, this will be a great win for Karolina Pliskova — I don’t see Angie coming back.

  6. Pliskova hits 6 aces, she’s playing calm and clutch. The biggest title of her young career!

Two Sunday’s in a row Angie plays 2nd to the young, talented ingenue. What to do…

  7. Ratcliff no i didnt actually see any of the Olympics at all till last Monday when i got back from camp, gutted to miss the tennis, and Farrah and Ennis Hill, but i recorded alot so i will have a look through to find some, but what i have seen this week ive enjoyed, loved watching gymastics especially rythemic, syncronised swimming, diving, and ive become a huge fan of water polo now too πŸ˜‰ ….

    • I’ll send you an email later to get caught up πŸ˜‰

My favorite Summer Olympics is track and field and swimming. I love seeing the best in the world run long distance and marathon. I was a 5-10k runner …loved running relays — long ones like Hood to Coast Relay. Mo Farrah is incredible. The Kenyan who won the men’s marathon…forgetting his name, his running style over the entire course was looked good. Not all the time do you see ones that run distance and make it look as good! Even smiling and waving as they run 4 minute miles! 26 miles at UNDER 2 hours, 10 minutes!

  8. Ratcliff they are incredible, i loved watching what the Brownlee brothers did too, i wish i was fit enough to run like you, i get knackered climbing the stairs at work lol, you have my deepest admiration, cheers RC look forward to your e.mail πŸ˜‰ ….

    • I was very surprised to see that kerber lost. I did not see the match, but congratulations to Pliskova for the win.

    • Alison…I don’t run like I used to! but thanks πŸ˜€ 10 minute miles for 45 minutes, uphill/downhill trail running is best. The road is too hard on me. Mountain Biking around town is my other activity. The mountain bike is safer and more stable than a skinny tire road bike. Watching the Olympic swimming made me want to start a routine again. It’s about baby steps a fast walk is a good place to start. Galen Rupp (from my city) got a bronze in the Marathon – his first marathon. (he’s a distant cousin, too :D)
(Still owe you an email, it’s coming…)

  9. Tuesday New Haven Picks:
    Makarova over Sevastova
    Bacsinszky over Larrson
Tsurenko over Bencic (Bencic coming back from injury)
    Vesnina over Kontaveit
    Radwanska over Ostapenko
    Svitolina over Rodina

    • Gosh, can’t keep up with the withdrawals in New Haven:
Konta out with low back injury. Strycova out with illness.
Pavlyuchenkova out with back muscle strain. Keys out with neck pain.
Kuznetsova out with rt. shoulder strain. Ka.Pliskova out with lower back pain.

Lucky Losers IN: Flipkens, Rodina, Kontaveit, Kayla Day?, Giorgi, Tsurenko.

Keep an eye on these names – WTA Bracket Challenge USO coming soon!

  10. Thursday Quarterfinal Picks, New Haven:
But New Haven will be a nice 470 points for the brave. Go Aga!
It’s tough to guess who will last until Saturday in New Haven when minds will be on US Open, but…

    Vinci over Larsson
    Svitolina vs Vesnina
    Kvitova vs Makarova
    Radwanska over Flipkens

  11. Friday New Haven Semifinals

    Johanna Larsson vs Elina Svitolina
I like both of them recently but it should be close. Elina in 3.

    Aga Radwanska vs Petra Kvitova
I’m always happy about an Aga v Petra match. Aga has won their last two meetings but h2h is 6-4 to Petra, and the Czech is the reigning champ in New Haven. Petra Kvitova is my pick.

  12. US Open WTA BRACKET tip:

This New Haven Semi is a disappointment. Petra Kvitova looked good all week but tonight she came out slow and looks like she hit the ‘wall’. Radwanska is winning easily. Petra is the defending champion here and she’s won New Haven 2 or 3 times. Maybe it’s too hot and humid for her tonight? Kinda appears that way. Petra has not been at her best since she had mono in 2015. Her endurance and recovery is questionable. Note to self: maybe don’t pick her too deep for US Open. She beat Chirico, Bouchard, and Makarova before this match — so no more than 3 rounds, my guess, depending on the opponents and conditions.

Radwanska vs Svitolina New Haven Final Saturday:
Svitolina is playing well. Aggressive and strong in her semi. Hard for me to judge Aga in this match; but I maybe can see Svitolina beating Aga tomorrow. Elina Svitolina is hungry — has been all season.

  13. Aga has been spot serving well all week but this 2nd set she’s had two chances to serve for the title and dropped serve both times. Naturally, Svitolina gained confidence after that! Aga’s tight and shaky on serve.

Lucky for Aga that Elina got tight also and started over-hitting. It’s Radwanska’s 19th career title! 470 points. Aga gutted it out, barely. A 3rd set would have been too much.

She has had her right shoulder/arm taped in this tournament — good luck to her next week!
