  1. The order of play looks brutal for Eastbourne! Many are scheduled to play two matches on Tuesday due to bad weather on Monday.
? Kvitova v Babos, Bacsinszky v Mladenovic, Wozniacki v Stosur, Bouchard v Begu, Ostpenko v Cibulkova, Vesnina v Bencic, and Radwanska v Lucic-Baroni or Allertova.

Hoping Kvitova has a good week and goes deep!

  2. RC good picking, you know your stuff, hoping the bring it to W, id like to see new champions on both sides, and when it comes to the bracket challenge im always up for it, just had a lot of trouble when it comes to logging in on the none GS bracket challenges for some reason ! ….

    • Thanks, alison. I’m improving slowly. And of course, I’ll set up a bracket as usual for WTA Wimbledon bracket on Tourneytopia.

I do enjoy this other bracket game for following the non GS tournaments. Feel free to join me whenever the mood strikes, there’s an ATP and WTA bracket every week and this link: http://www.tennisdrawchallenge.com/

Kvitova got a solid win over Babos and Radwanska beat Lucic-Baroni. The one I’m wondering about is Vika Azarenka – there’s no news about her; also Halep’s Achilles injury had flared up again a week ago. Wozniacki, Mladenovic, Pliskova, Bouchard, got good wins today and most impressive, Cibulkova over Ostapenko and Misaki Doi over Carla Suarez-Navarro!

  3. I like this Eastbourne draw.
    Round 3:
    Radwanska v Bouchard
Bouchard has been playing well with a win over Kovinic in Mallorca and wins over Lepchenko and Begu here. Radwanska hasn’t had much match play on grass yet. She lost first round match in Birmingham to Vandeweghe, had a first round bye here and her second round opponent had to retire. If Eugenie comes out confident and aggressive, Aga could be in trouble. Picking Aga to find her way through in 3 sets.

    Cibulkova v Bondarenko
Bondarenko made the quarterfinal in Birmingham losing to red hot Pironkova. But poor Kateryna had to play two tough three set matches vs Putinseva and Kuznetsova because of rain on Monday. Cibulkova had a bye and got an easy straight set win over an exhausted Ostapenko. I expect Dominika to win this one.
    Mladenovic v Friedsam
I haven’t see Anna-Lena Friedsam on grass. She lost a qualifying round in Hertogenbosh and second round to Garcia in Mallorca. I’ll go with Hertogenbosh’s finalist, Mladenovic.

    Wozniacki v Puig
This might be close. Monica Puig is having a better 2016, 31/15 win-loss vs 9/9 for Woz. Monica is ranked #43 and Caroline has dropped to #37. But I think Caroline is starting to get it together with easy wins over Cornet and Stosur. Time for Woz to turn the year around.

    Pliskova v Doi
Doi has a reputation of being tricky but it shouldn’t be too difficult for this years’ Nottingham champion. Pliskova ftw.

    Vesnina over Brengle
Brengle had to beat Van Uytvanck in 3 tough sets and Pavlyuchenkova both today. Vesnina had one match and beat Bencic in straight sets.

Kvitova over Konta ? I lean toward Kvitova but can see Konta win too

    Makarova over Petkovic
Petkovic leads their h2h 4-0, all on hard court. But I like Makarova right now.

    • Radwanska, Vesnina, and Cibulkova, Puig, and Konta all made it. But two matches were rained out: Pliskova was a set a break up on Doi and Petkovic v Makarova had just started.

      Thursday Eastbourne:
Pliskova v Doi and Petkovic v Makarova round three matches to finish.
      Quarterfinals:
      Radwanska v Cibulkova
They’ve played eleven times and Aga leads 7-4. This will be the first time they’ve met on grass. So far this season Aga beat Dominika at Indian wells and Dominika beat Aga in Madrid – both were tough 3 set matches!

      Mladenovic v Puig
This is only the third time they’ve met. Mladenovic leads 2-1, but they have not played on grass. I’ll go with Kiki Mladenovic but Monica Puig’s backhand is on fire.
Pliskova should be able to finish off Doi in 2 sets. But Makarova v Petkovic could take a long time. Vesnina waits to play the winner of Pliskova/Doi and Konta to play Makarova or Petkovic. What a performance from Konta to beat Kvitova today!

      • Rain in Eastbourne interrupted the schedule again.
Karolina Plskova and Ekaterina Makarova made the Quartfinals. But the only QF to finish so far is Puig over Mladenovic.
Radwanska v Cibulkova, Pliskova v Vesnina, and Konta v Makarova matches are still left to go.

My list of dangerous floaters: Caroline Wozniacki, Sabine Lisicki, Monica Puig, Eugenie Bouchard, Ekaterina Makarova, Timea Babos, Elena Vesnina, and Jelena Ostapenko.

  5. Radwańska just fended off a matchpoint in 4R against Cibulkova and leads 3-6 7-5 1-0.

Having already defended three matchpoints in her meeting with Ana Konjuh in the 2nd round, she has just defended a fourth matchpoint (in two matches combined) this tournament – and she’s still in play!

  6. Ana Ivanovic got married in Venice today.

  7. Monica Puig ?? ? ?
What a trophy ceremony! Kerber with the silver and Petra with the bronze.
Congrats to the Russians: Vesnina and Makarova winning Gold in doubles — great win for them and Russia!

  8. Catching up with Ostapenko and Schmiedlova:
Jelena Ostapenko, the teenager from Latvia, seems to have gone cold after such a good start to 2016. She’s the same aggressive, fearless competitor but it looks to me like she’s grown an inch maybe, put on weight, and is struggling with fitness. Her opponent, another young talent from Slovakia, Anna Schmiedlova, has no trouble with fitness but struggles with nerves when she’s leading and choked away a match she should have won. Hope both can find a way to get going in the right direction.

I still have big hopes for 20 yr. old, Louisa Chirico too. She was scheduled to play Olympic Gold medalist, Monica Puig, but Monica withdrew with citing back trouble.

“Sad to announce top seed Serena Williams has withdrawn from 2016 tournament due to a shoulder injury.”

  10. My list of Next Gen WTA players to watch (I’m using born in 1994 and later).
    In the top 100.

    Madison Keys 1995
    Elina Svitolina 1994
    Daria Kasatkina 1997
    Belinda Bencic 1997
    Jelena Ostapenko 1997
    Eugenie Bouchard 1994
    Yulia Putintseva 1995
    Annika Beck 1994
    Anna-Lena Friedsam 1994
    Daria Gavrilova 1994
    Danka Kovinic 1994
    Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 1994
    Saisai Zheng 1994
    Nao Hibino 1994
    Katerina Siniakova 1996
    Louisa Chirico 1996
    Margarita Gasparyan 1994
    Anett Kontaveit 1995
    Maria Sakkari 1995
    Kateryna Kozlova 1994
    Ana Konjuh 1997
    Samantha Crawford 1995

I’m now curious how much younger the average age is in the top 100 WTA compared to the ATP.

  11. Cincinati QF Picks:

Happy that Radwanska made it! It was a tough match v Jo Konta.

    Halep over Radwanska in 3
    Pliskova over Kuznetsova in 3
    Kerber over CSN in 2
    Muguruza over Babos in 2

Yikes! All could go the other way around. Kerber, Halep, and Muguruza look the strongest with Babos and Pliskova also playing well.

    • rc,

I like your picks for the women! As you said, it could all go the other way, but I would have picked the same! ?

      • Pliskova made it! I got to watch most of it on tennis channel this morning before they switched to doubles coverage. Time to switch over to ESPN2. Sheesh. Poor tennis channel, I have to think. Seems like they get the leftovers when NBC and ESPN are involved.

        Kerber vs Suarez-Navarro
I couldn’t watch any tennis yesterday but heard Kerber looked tired after her battle with Barbora Strycova. Kerber of course played the to the final in Rio.

        • Very happy for Aga! It was really strange how from 6-7 3-4 she won nine games in a row.
I give Suarez Navarro at least a set against Angie today. I have a feeling that Kerber will not win the tournament and become no.1.

Unfortunately, I have to pick Halep over Radwanska in 2. I’m Polish so I obviously want Aga to win but Simona looks too good right now. Anyway, I expect a great quality encounter.

Muguruza seems to be on the right track and should dismantle Babos easily.

          • Work kept me from watching Aga vs Johanna. I’m not Polish but I am a long-time Aga tennis fan. I’ll have to go find it on youtube – she must have found some magic 😀

I’m watching Angie and Carla and agree, Kerber is probably not going to become #1. She might win this match but she’s not as strong as I thought. Love CSN’s backhand.

I’ll be home watching Aga v Simona. Both are top favorite WTA players!

          • Aga suprised me by playing really agressively in the Konta match. Of course she’ll never have that kind of power as Serena or Sharapova does but I always thought that she should go to gym and build her muscle strength.

When Martina Navratilova was coaching her for a short time back in 2015, she was teaching Aga how to play aggresively and wanted to increase her power level. However, Radwanska didn’t agree with the legend as she thought gaining power would decrease her amazing “touch” and technique abilities.

Aga being really passive seems to be the reason why she lost many matches lately, for example to Cibulkova Wimbledon 4R, Pavlyuchenkova in Toronto or that Olympics 1R to Saisai Zheng. In order to beat Simona today she would have to play really agressively, be the first one to attack often, but I don’t really think she can.

And I agree on Carla’s backhand. It’s really classy and beautiful.
One handed backhand is so much more beautiful than double handed.

  12. I actually really like Aga’s finesse and touch. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy watching her so much. It can be a disadvantage when you are playing someone like Serena and others who have the power. Halep does present problems for Aga and playing aggressive tennis is crucial. But there is just a quality about Aga’s tennis that I have always found so appealing.

I didn’t know that Aga worked with Martina. I am not surprised that Martina wanted her to train to be stronger. Interesting that Aga did not want to go there.

    • I was excited and liked the idea about Martina coaching Aga until I watched her play. She looked miserable – Indian Wells 2015. I was relieved when she was back to playing her game. She’s graceful and creative. But she’s deceptively athletic and fast too. Not a big serve and forehand tho but she often beats those kind 😉

Simona will beat her from the baseline. Aga has to get court position be aggressive and create some magic. Sometimes it’s hard to do and doesn’t work. Like if she’s getting pushed back as she is right now vs Simona, and plays passive as Manwerty says, she loses.

It’s a 5-4 Radwanska h2h. But Simona gets the first set with a goat drop shot. Coach Cahill tells her: dig in and refuse to lose. Everyone needs a Coach Cahill 😀
