  1. @ed251137, 11:48 am; If only people knew how to laugh at themselves, half the world’s problems would be solved right there…………

  2. I would like Federer a whole lot more if he could laugh at himself and admit he is often a pompous ass πŸ™‚

I dread each encounter between Rafa and Djokovic. I swear the strutting and swaggering got worse and worse with each win he had this autumn. He likes to ‘entertain’ the crowds but he takes himself far too seriously and is puffed up with his own self importance.

I saw a headline for a Bleacher item last week entitled ‘Djokovic the real No.1’. I couldn’t bring myself to even click on it to find out what was being said. In the wake of his wins over Rafa there was a distinct tendency for his achievements to be talked up by commentators and journalists – almost as though Rafa had become No.1 by default. πŸ™

    • ^^Trouble is (for him), Djokovic then believes the propaganda………..

      What people forget is:
      a. what Djokovic accomplished this Fall is nothing new, he did the same last year.
      b. what Rafa accomplished this year, he did during his transition (from injury) year. Nobody, not even Rafa himself, expected to do as well as he did. Djokovic wrote Rafa off after MC and he fully expected the competition to only come from Muzza, hence the hiring (and abrupt firing) of Fibak. Novak’s capitulation in the 4th set of USOpen was that of a man who knew he had made a serious mistake.

They are underestimating Rafa again, for 2014…………which is okay…………

      Vamos!!

—hence the hiring (and abrupt firing) of Fibak—

Fibak was probably fired because of hailing Rafa as a genius after the U.S. Open.
Nadal Beats Djokovic to Win U.S. Open, September 9, 2013: “During the match, the thought that kept coming to my mind was that I was watching a genius,” said Wojtek Fibak, the former Polish player hired by Djokovic as a coaching consultant. β€œIt’s like Chopin who was born to compose music. Nadal was born to win tennis matches.”

  3. Journalists and interviewers have spent nigh on 10 years without success trying to get Rafa to talk up his chances, or even admit he is the favourite πŸ™‚

Djokovic on the other hand announced, as far back as Roland Garros 2006 after retiring when he was down 4:6, 4:6, that he KNEW how to win against Rafa on clay. It took him five years to actually do it. Modest he is not.

    • Wikipedia: €€€ Susana GimΓ©nez
MarΓa Susana GimΓ©nez Aubert, commonly known as Susana or Su, is an Argentine talk show host, actress, model and businesswoman. She is considered the biggest celebrity in Argentine television. She is the host of Susana GimΓ©nez, a highly-rated television variety show in Argentina, similar in format to those of Raffaella CarrΓ  (in Italy and Spain) and Oprah Winfrey (in United States). GimΓ©nez entered into the Guinness Book of Records because all the letters and phone calls she received in her show. In 1997 she was awarded with the Golden MartΓn Fierro Award. In 2000 won the INTE award for best Hispanic American TV hostess. Her TV show was the only one that received important international stars of Hollywood and Europe.
Most of her filming career was in adult-oriented comedies. Giménez has acted in over 30 films. €€€

  4. “Most of her filming career was in adult-oriented comedies.”

Okay, explains it all really……..she is a porn-star made good.

    • Am sure the first thing Rafa says to himself when he sees Xisca (after enduring such visual assaults) is: there by the grace of God go I…………..

    • ^^Ed: I thought the same thing about her facelift…very unfortunate results. As for her popularity in Argentina; as we know, popularity does not equate to quality. Prime example: the popularity of “Jersey Shore” a few years back here in the United States. Ugh, the show was an embarrassment.

  5. Here’s a link for the match between Rafa and Novak tomorrow. In addition to the streams that will be available, a local TV station, Chilevision, is showing it as a regular broadcast program, although on a 2 1/2 hour delay. The event is at 8 pm local time. (That’ll be 3 pm for me…a luxury to not have to watch Rafa’s matches at some odd hour). At the bottom of the link page, it says “Ver Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic aqui” (See Rafa and Novak here). That’s the link to click to watch it.

  6. I dont think Djokovic speaks much Spanish so presumably he will be spared being interviewed by this dreadful woman unless she speak good English.

Apologies if I’m treading on anybody’s toes but she is what one might call an acquired taste.

    • ed251137@November 19, 2013 at 5:43 pm

I don’t care what happens to Djoko.
Rafa is treated as a celebrity in Argentina by their biggest celebrities. That’s all that matters.

Are British commentators enough good looking to do interviews with players? Or maybe Rafa should refuse to give interviews sometimes?

      • Living in France I’m a bit out of touch with British TV although I can get it and do watch some programmes. Offhand I cant think of any major female chat show hosts (or should that be hostesses?) on the scale of Ms. Whatshername in Argentinia. In recent years most of the good female presenters have been pushed to the sidelines and replaced by dolly birds who range from vapid to downright dumb and are not even good at being the stooge for the male presenter let alone capable of carrying a programme on their own.

    • Tell you what, @augusta08, the only Brit TV personality I can think of who best resembles the Argentinian lady presenter is Matt Lucas (in drag) of Little Britain! No, Rafa should not refuse to give interviews……30 minutes of pain and suffering against a healthy pay cheque…………..take the money, Rafa!

Please forgive my totally wacky sense of humour but what to do? There’s no tennis!

  7. Did anyone see ‘Jerry Springer the Opera’? Priceless. Far better than the real thing. It was way beyond the limits of bad taste. Still have my souvenir C**** with a D*** badge πŸ™‚

    • On my list of “to dos” ed πŸ™‚
BTW Have you ever seen Gabby Logan? Have a soft spot for her, but she mainly commentates on Rugby. Married to Kenny Logan a rugby player..

  8. ^ Ed: The opera is on Youtube, and you’re right, it’s far better than the real thing although I’d rather hold my head under water too long than watch the actual Jerry Springer show.

  9. There are probably very few countries in the world that can produce a show like LIttle Britain! I mean that as a compliment and nothing but, even with and because of the level and especially the kind of cringy-ness… it can perhaps only happen in countries that can also produce Fawlty Towers, Monty Python or Ab Fab.

  10. Ah…..that curious mixture of irony, self deprecation and an overwhelming desire to kick anyone who has “got too big for their boots.”
Don’t blag yourselves up in Britain folks..;)
    #GoodNBad

  11. ^^^^perceptive observation. Taking someone down a peg or two is a noticeable British trait and getting too big for your boots is regarded as a mortal sin.

My school was hellbent in squashing any pride in prowess at individual sports. Team spirit was all. ‘Edwina lacks team spirit’ was a constant accusation on my school reports. The sports at which I did excel (riding, tennis, swimming and sailing) counted for little except when I competed successfully against other schools which elicited a lukeward ‘thank you’ for bringing glory to the school.

Ironically all the gold and silver Olympic medals won by Britain last summer were for individual sports! The only team medal was a bronze for the women’s hockey team.

So much for the emphasis on the value of team spirit.

  12. I’m trying to work out how on the Rafa thread, we have ended up discussing British humour and I am recounting the trauma of my school days πŸ™‚

    • ed. I think we share a very dry, ironic sense of humour which has got us into BIG trouble in the past!
Also quite possibly….you believe a couple of players, who in the interests of the love and peace on this blog, have certainly got “too big for their boots.”
      Glad u like Gabby too.
      #SiameseTwins…..;)

      • I’m not sure if you were around on TT mid 2008 but four of us, including an avid Fed fan, formed an unholy alliance which drove a lot of people nuts because they couldn’t follow our sense of humour or fathom what we were taking about much of the time so started a series of vicious attacks. In the end somebody accused me of using multiple screen names and my account was suspended. Took me ages to get re-instated. I think the worst attackers may have included the people who took us to task some years later πŸ˜‰
        Humour can backfire.
        #AlterEgo

  13. I am surprised Rafa went along with this. Presumably his agent and PR people agreed to the stunt. I’m with Gussie, I dont like the ‘bluff’ concept: what’s more the link to poker is tenuous and lacks credibility. I know it is supposedly in the name of a good cause but the ends don’t justify the means.

    • No, b4 my time. Must’ve been 2009 when I started. U were actively posting then, so ban must’ve been lifted ;)….as were “queen of the night” and “trixxyfest.” sorely missed.
