      • God littlefoot..please..How pessimistic and negative are you? That way there is no guarantee for anyone in life at all right? As much as MH370 case is frightening because it still is not solved after 2 months plus, it still is taking it too far being worried for Rafa 🙂

      • Please @littlefoot, don’t remind me of “that” mystery! I am going home on Sunday for a couple of weeks (flying, of course) and I have to blank out any thoughts of little green men (they have to be men, no?) salivating at the prospect of kidnapping my Rafan ass! Especially if they are Fedfans……….

  2. If only Rafa was hated (disliked) at Wimbledon as he is hated (disliked) in Paris, he’d own Wimbledon as well.

  3. Not to worry hawkeye. I know there are always two sides to an argument but unlike some, this is the first time you’ve been on the wrong side.

    Vamos Rafa

  6. Goran Ivanisevic :With this grass,Nadal can win Wimbledon again”.

Goran Ivanisevic (Split, Croacia; 1971)will always be a champion in Wimbledon. he had won 19 títles, but had 3 yrs without winning. When he arrived in London in 2001, his times as number 2 of the world seemed very far.His last 3 finals in 1992, 1994 and 1998, lost facing Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, were memories that seemed old.He was then in the 125 ATP ranking, arrived with an invitation from the tournament and the precious year he lost in 1st round.Story says that the brand that worked with him gave him just 2 tshirts bcs they thought he was going to have the same luck as the previous year. But he not only did not lose,he also played and won 7 matches all of them except the first against players ranked in the 1st 40 atp ranking. It was the last title of his career. It was his 1st GS.It was the perfect closing for that adventure in tennis of 16 years.

Question. “I do not care if I will never win another match.Whatever I do in my life, and wherever I go,I will always be a Wimbledon champion.”

Answer. Yes,bcs I was in the final 3 times and it was disappointing not having won Wimbledon.

    Q. Wimbledon is another world next to the other 3 GS?

    A. Maybe all grass, all the tradition, all the rules..it is the most special,no doubt abt it.

    Q. How did you feel when u enetered for the 1st time in All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club?

A.It was incredible I remember it was in 1998,a long time ago(he sighs)I will never forget that day and the day I won.

” It would have been a huge disappointment not to win Wimbledon”

Q.Do you remember the exact moment when u won Wimbledon?

A.I don´t remember every match,I remember every point of that match [6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 y 9-7 against Patrick Rafter].It was very tough and I was very nervous. You are playing to win the title in Wimbledon and… (his sight gets lost in the memories of that day)

Q.And they gave you the Golden trophey.

A.It is amazing, the best feeling ever.

Q.Tell us abt the final in 2008,For many, the best match ever seen.

    A. Nadal-Federer?

    Q. Yes. Nadal-Federer in 2008.

A.let´s see… I cannot say it was the best match ever,we have the one Borg-McEnroe…it was one of the best, but not the best in the history of tennis-

    Q. Roger was there after 66 victories in a row on grass,5 times in Wimbledon. and Nadal won. Can he repeat that triumph in Wimbledon?

    A. Nadal can beat any challenge.Bcs grass is not what it used to be,it is slower. He has won Wimbledon, twice,so… why not again?with this grass ,he has options.

  7. RT @Mike_Dickson_DM : “An outcome of next year’s extended grass court season is that it will diminish the case for special Wimbledon seedlings.”

    Good point.

    • I don’t think it will change anything wrt the Wimbledon special seedlings IMO. Top seeds will rest the week after FO, play a warm-up and rest the week before Wimby. Grass season will still be miniscule compared to other “surfraces” plus the fact that grass play remains completely different to clay and hc.

      #StillaRafan

    • Instead of one week, they should move Wimby back three weeks to start 3rd week of July. Convert some of the smaller 250s to grass and make some 500s. This would allow a week off before Washington 500 hc.

I’m assuming it would make better chances for fair weather at Wimby as well.

This would allow for a more balanced grass season.

  8. John Inverdalw is asking anyone he can get hold of for their opinion on the Wimbledon seeding system. I think that this year it looks even worse because Andy has benefited. Gasquet was non committal, but he is not affected anyway. I’d like to hear what Stan thinks. At least Federer in not affected, given that it doesn’t matter whether he is seeded 3 or 4. But the argument for the system doesn’t hold water when a one time champion is seemingly better on grass than the 7 times champion.

Guga boycotted Wimbledon in 2001 because he wasn’t seeded 1 when he was world #1. It was because of this that they introduced the 32 seeds instead of 16 seeds because the good clay court players complained that it was unfair.

    • Over the last two years, the one time champion has been better than the seven time champion.

Former: ’12 Finalist, Gold Medal, ’13 Champ, Queen’s title
Latter: ’12 Champ, Silver Medal, ’13 2R, Two Halle titles/RU

The Gold medal and the 2013 differential makes a huge difference.

I don’t think that the grass weighting should extend back more than two years. There are exceptions, but for the most part it works.

I think Murray as defending champ has a much better chance than Federer to win this year. Seven best-of-fives is just too much to ask for Federer at this point. He can do it possibly but he shouldn’t be ahead of the other Top 4.

Likewise, j-Stan. never past the 4th round, should be 5th at best.

      • I actually don’t have any problems with the seedings as they are, let’s see who they place in Rafa’s way on Friday! I have a feeling they will give Fed ANOTHER cake-walk draw to improve his chances of a last hurray………….

    • Besides one QF, Guga never made it past the 3R at Wimbly.

Sure he grumbled about it but his inability to play well on grass, and not the Wimbly seedlings, has more to do with why Guga didn’t make Wimbly a priority.

Doubt a higher seed would have convinced him to play.

Wimbledon yesterday unveiled a new seedings system designed to stave off boycotts by players unhappy with the championships’ bias towards grass-court specialists.

Starting with this year’s event in SW19, the number of seeds at all Grand Slams will double from 16 to 32 at each major and be drawn from the top 32 places on the men’s ATP tournament entry system and women’s WTA Tour rankings.

No player ranked in the world’s leading 32 will be excluded from the Wimbledon seeds in favour of one with a grass court pedigree. Alex Corretja, the French Open runner-up, and another Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero, had both threatened to withdraw from Wimbledon because the seedings have favoured those players who prosper on grass. Ferrero pulled out of last year’s Wimbledon with a back injury while Corretja and another Spanish clay court specialist, Albert Costa, decided not to play. Gustavo Kuerten, the world No 1 and reigning French Open champion, has already said he will miss Wimbledon but has avoided the controversy by claiming he needs a rest.

The new system will, however, retain a small element of preferential treatment for specialists: seedings will be based on past performances on a particular surface. But this will be calculated by a formula, and not by a seedings committee. In the men’s singles at Wimbledon, that formula will take into account each player’s ranking on 18 June, plus a weighted assessment of all his grass-court results since 1997-98.

The committee will, however, determine the 32 women’s seeds as in previous years. The women’s seedings are generally regarded as less contentious than the men’s, because performances differ less markedly on different surfaces. From next year, an objective system based on surfaces will be adopted.

Under the new method, Pete Sampras, currently ranked at No 4 on the ATP entry system, is likely to be seeded No 1 in the men’s singles at Wimbledon, having won the event for seven of the past eight years and being the world’s dominant player on grass. But the British No 2, Greg Rusedski, ranked at No 46 in the ATP system, has no chance of being seeded at Wimbledon, despite his relative expertise on grass.

In the past, a ranking outside the top 16 did not rule out a seeding at Wimbledon. The organisers defended the old system, saying it avoided too many first-round casualties among the seeds. But that has led to growing disaffection among some leading players, especially the clay court specialists. They argue that rankings are earned by year-round performances on all surfaces and that should be rewarded with appropriate seedings, regardless of the arena. The new system will seek to counter those criticisms.

Tim Phillips, chairman of the All England Club and the Wimbledon championships, said: “We have consulted widely with the players together with the ATP, WTA and our Grand Slam colleagues and believe we have reached a sensible solution to this important issue.

“We have stayed true to our beliefs that seeding at Wimbledon should take into account players’ grass court credentials and, at the same time, have addressed players’ concerns by accepting that the Wimbledon seeds will be the top 32 players in the entry system of each player association.

“We are delighted that our partners in the Grand Slams have also adopted a surface-based approach.”

The Grand Slam Committee said the new system would ensure tennis’s four majors stayed faithful to the two primary aims of seeding a balanced draw that more evenly distributes the best players on a particular surface and respects players’ rankings and entry systems.

Mark Miles, chief executive of the ATP, welcomed the expansion of seeding to 32, but said the governing body of the men’s game would monitor the new arrangement. There was a danger, he believed, that it could become too technical for fans to understand. The APT would also seek the players’ opinions on the change.
