[Excerpts translated from Spanish by Chris Boardman]
    ABC, Dec. 1, 2015: ¤¤ Rafa Nadal: <>
Question: “Did it take much to convince you to take your clothes off?”
    RAFA: “No, not much (laughs)…
Well, I was very shy when I was young. Now I’m a little less shy because I have lived with many people around me for so many years and that helps to overcome shyness. But that does not stop me from feeling strange when I see myself on a billboard with few clothes on. I guess it’s part of my life and my work.”
Question: “And I suppose it would be easier to pose in a suit rather than just your underwear…”
RAFA: “Honestly it has been the same. I was with my team, with my trusted people. It does not bother me more to pose without clothes (laughs).”
Question: “Can you earn more as a model?”
RAFA: “I do not know if I can earn more as a model than as a tennis player. But I do know that if you do well in your sport you have more choices of starring in campaigns. I don’t do campaigns just because, but because I accomplished something prominently in my work. I’m not someone special, but I’ve done something special on the court and that’s why brands trust me.”¤¤ 🙂

*Not for the Djoko fan, who sees Rafa as ‘a piece of meat.’

      • Lovely interview Gussie.
Millions of fans know how special he is but he’s never been allowed to regard himself in that light or get above himself. I’m convinced having all the family around him ia what keeps him grounded. Also they are affluent in their own right so are not about to be overly impressed by his earnings.

  3. I tried to order Rafa’s Official 2016 calendar from Amazon today and it’s out of stock. The calendars of other top players are available.

You are correct – the IPTL is an an exhibition tournament!
From Wikipedia: ¤¤ The International Premier Tennis League (IPTL, officially the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League Presented by Qatar Airways pursuant to sponsorship agreements with The Coca-Cola Company and Qatar Airways) is an annual team tennis league that takes place in various cities in Asia. Founded in 2013, the elite level EXHIBITION tennis tournament took place for the first time in November 2014. ¤¤

          • Why don’t you go on wiki and correct it? Of course it’s an exhibition. Players have to be invited to be in the league and there are no points awarded; also players can drop off from the teams at will and they don’t have to participate in all the countries.

          • Sure they get points. Check the standings.

By invited, I assume you mean drafted like most professional sports.

According to Ricky, NBA and Premier League are exhibition by that definition.

            And it makes me wonder.

    • Business Standard, Dec. 10, 2015: ¤¤ Nadal, Bhupathi tennis academies tie up for collaboration.

“We try to help the kids to become better tennis players, and help them to become best possible in tennis and help them create their own stories with their lives. This idea is right at the centre of my foundation. The thing that we’re trying to do is to give opportunities to the kids to learn from the best to have a better life and help them learn the technicalities that go into the game,” Nadal said on Thursday.¤¤
