Hi Guys. With a little help from my friends finally found my way here.
Don’t know for sure but I think WordPress may possibly have changed over to using the Reader Pane in place of linking topics together with the Reply To button. Tried to test this theory without any luck so far.
Posted this comment on the ‘Djokovic wins……..’ thread. Ricky rightly pointed out it belongs here.
Rafa (a) has never sheltered behind injuries as a reason for his losses and (b) is extremely reluctant to admit to how bad they are until it is so obvious it becomes impossible to hide.
He has battled with severe pain throughout his career. The transition from clay to grass is hard on most players – and for Rafa particularly difficult. All the more surprising he achieved the Channel slam which is a measure of his sheer will power to break through the pain barrier.
He has only recently admitted he was playing with severe pain ALL through 2013: the year which stands out for me as possibly one of his greatest in the light of what it represented.
The constant raking through their careers comparing Nadal, Federer and Djokovic, based on raw numbers, is to lose sight of what each of them have individually achieved and contributed to this sport.
”I thought he did tremendously well to be able to come back from a few points (away) from losing the match against Rosol, Dimitrov, Cilic,” Djokovic said. ”I think it’s going to help him mentally the most.”
Muzz on rafa:
”The last few months he’s started winning matches again and the ones he’s been losing, most of them have been very close,” Murray said Sunday. ”He’s getting back close to where he wants to be.”
People – Rafa won the most points post USO in 2013 (amongst his best year) of all his career where he amassed I think 2000 points (2 F – Beijing and WTF and 2 SF – Shanghai and Paris)
Not sure how Rafa will perform in Paris and WTF but he already has taken 960 points and if all goes well, can reach upto 1400-1500 hopefully.
So he is not doing that bad.
BTW Novak and Murray and Fed seem to be keeping a very close watch on Rafa :-). I like it 🙂
They have to say something nice. Rafa would also do the same when asked about Fed or Murray during their not so good years.
Rafa clearly is still some way off from his normal level (of 2014). He’s still not good enough to beat the top 3, will have to see how he fares vs Kei should they meet. Kei beat him convincingly at Montreal.
The fact that the comments made by Djoko and Murray bear a resemblance to the truth is not a coincidence; so I think they are being genuine. They won’t be the only ones in the locker room to notice that the Rafa is putting the lack of confidence behind him and that he is playing well and getting to his best.
I think the press is being harsh on Rafa…why would he have to listen to French?! He did not understand a thing there and why would he pretend that he did?
My interpretation of the Usa Today article was the complete opposite. I think they were taking a dig at TMF’s doublespeak and his patronising comments about Rafa. There is always a sting in the tail if ever he pays a compliment to his opponents. Rafa has heard it all before. However he usually makes a better fist of hiding his boredom 🙂
It’s German (probably Swiss German), not French.
Rafa understands French, but not German, of course he wasn’t listening! I have read that even most Germans don’t understand Swiss German.
(BTW, U.Toni is fluent in German.)
Even had it been in French Rafa has mastered some French but not enough to follow when spoken at the normal rapid pace. WaWa speaks Swiss French. The educated Swiss mostly speak several languages (they have to) so speaking three or four languages is no big deal.
I was forgetting about his mother. I wonder how many languages their kids speak.
Most bi-lingual kids are adept at mastering new languages very quickly. My grand-daughters are French-English and speak good German and Spanish and the eldest can get by in Italian and Japanese. She is due to spend three months in Laos monitoring the teaching of English so will now need to add a working knowledge of the Lao language too.
There are many people on this site for whom English is not their first language but you would never know it.
I chuckled the other day when one commentator said Anderson was trying to be the first ‘African’ to enter the top 10. I know it’s technically correct but still sounds strange.
Rafa has won the hearts and minds of Australia and Switzerland. Considering the behaviour of the AO organizers when Rafa beat Roger for the AO 2009 title, I am surprised that it’s Rafa who is the official friend of the Australian Open. It may well be that Fed priced himself out as he does.
“The ball is so bad here,” Nadal to the AP. “If you throw the ball on the floor, the bounce goes everywhere. Is not a question of winning or losing. I won in Rio (earlier this year) with this ball. I won tournaments with this ball.
“It’s just that we’re competing at the top level of our sport, tennis, and the ball is an important thing.
“This week we are playing with one ball. Next week we are playing with a different ball,” he said. “That’s dangerous for the shoulder, dangerous for the elbow.”
Fans are everywhere.

I don’t, and will never, subscribe to the concept there can be a GOAT
#ComparisonsAreOdious
This is getting so confusing. Where are we supposed to talk about Rafa? On this one or on the new 2015 fan page for Rafa?
2015
All very well if you can get to the Rafa 2015 thread. But it is not offered when I go to the Player pages which is why I posted here.

Didn’t you see my Reply on the Site maintenance page?
Novak on rafa:

Agree with both.

vamosrafa,
It’s nice to read what the other top players are saying about Rafa. So they have noticed! Thanks for posting their comments. 🙂
They have to reply something when they are asked.
They have to say something nice. Rafa would also do the same when asked about Fed or Murray during their not so good years.

I think Rafa will end the year as #5. He has gone up to #6 today.
Rafa yawns at Fed’s victory speech in French. I guess Fed would do the same if Rafa was rabbiting on in Spanish.

Our Rafa is human and I love him for that…

I can’t think of anyone who loves the sound of their own voice more than Fed! One question and he is off – what’s more he can do it in four languages.

I didn’t listen to it, I would have known it wasn’t French. 🙂
A video for those who haven’t heard Rafa speaking in French:
https://twitter.com/rolandgarros/status/603934676575649792
According to this article it was FRENCH!
“Anyway, Nadal was half-listening and then when Federer went into fluent French, the Spaniard lost complete interest”…
I did not listen to it either, I just read the Article you posted… 🙂
Even had it been in French Rafa has mastered some French but not enough to follow when spoken at the normal rapid pace. WaWa speaks Swiss French. The educated Swiss mostly speak several languages (they have to) so speaking three or four languages is no big deal.
ed, we also have to remember that Fed’s mum is English speaking South African. I wonder if Mirka has taught him Slovak.
Nats: Not a lot of Americans know the difference between French and German 🙂
The clip was in Swiss German.
natashao2013 ( at 11:09 am),
I tend to check what writers write. 🙂
BTW, Rafa is a polyglot. He can give interviews in Catalan (spoken in Mallorca), Spanish, English, Italian.
Here Rafa gives an interview in Italian (in May 2015):

Rafa is on the cover of Australian Tennis magazine’s November issue {probably not only on the cover} :

To repeat:
In Beijing last year Rafa said:
