  1. On his current ranking, Rafa: “I don’t need to deal with (the loss to Djokovic) anymore. It’s in the past. I just have to improve my level of tennis, my intensity on the court. If I can do that, then I am confident I can get back to the highest level.”

    • thanks for that augusta…how do you get the pieces to join up to read the whole?? I could only read bits…
at last someone is addressing this issue – why one rule not the other &Tc
but I don’t want to see a stupid shot clock

      • Amy, i wrote a post regarding the questions you asked me….i have it on the RG fina thread…too much stuff there so ctrl+F and hit vamosrafa and you’ll be able to locate 🙂

  2. I’ve come to the conclusion that the should poi a 20 second shot clock on the court at Wimbledon. It would be the biggest failure in tennis and the quality of most if not all matches would be negatively impacted. Will be significantly worse again on hard and clay courts. And the clock would start one the point ended as stated in the current rule not after the score is called as some falsely believe it’s the case.

But they won’t because it would be almost impossible to single out Rafa so would be counter productive.

  3. This poster on tennis.com captures my fears very well:’

    “sparcboy says:

Sadly I think Rafa is done because of his back. He went back to that lame serve to prevent stressing his back and now all the great returners blast his second serve with no problem putting him immediately back on the defensive. Without a solid serve, you’re not going to be able to compete at the top these days. Just ask David Ferrer.

And that heavy topspin forehand is done. The top players have figured it out and it’s no longer an issue. If he doesn’t learn to hit hard and fast like the top players are doing, he’ll never be competitive with them again.

Seriously, I’m hoping he makes a complete liar out of me.”

The serve and the FH. I have been concerned about Rafa’s serve for a while now and of late, his FH as well.

    Find solutions Rafa!

  4. The French love Rafa:

    Post match interview

    Q. You have been defeated on the court where you had won before, and the crowd put their hands together for you quite loudly. Would you say that when they were applauding they were perhaps showing some type of recognition of who you are?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, you know, my first year was a big difficulty with the people, but since then I have never had any problems with them.
In the recent past I have seen that they are always supporting me. There is some type of emotion. In the past I could feel this in the streets in Paris when I was starting my career; whereas now, I suppose that people in general like me.
I thank them for this. It’s very important for me to receive support and the emotions of people, people who watch my matches. It’s something special, you see, something quite moving. They applauded me and they put their hands together for me.
As I said before in English, I will be back. I will be back and play Roland Garros, the French Open. I will be back, and I hope I will be back to win. I will do my best to be back to win. I will do my utmost to have more. I don’t know if this will be possible, but I will do my best so that this becomes reality.

  5. I wish I had an insight into Rafa’s innermost thoughts. I guess he measures himself against his real friends who are all probably still single rather than against his tennis colleagues. Rafa seems to be tied to his mother’s apron strings. Most young people look forward to leaving home and making a life for themselves; Rafa seems to want to stay at home for ever.

On the other hand, should he get married and start a family, it might make him even more homesick on tour. Whatever he needs to do to get his career back on track I wish he would just get on and do it.

  6. From augusta’s link:

    Q. So many stoppages give to think about other things. Federer and Djokovic, their biggest rivals have been parents. You, when?

    R. I am very familiar. I love children. My hope and my intention is to have more than two children, but today is a matter of time, preferences, how life takes you. I still live with my parents …

    Q. Well, touches leaving home!

    R. Without a stable life, is all little more complicated. We must also know the mentality of Mallorca, we are more familiar people, and be lucky enough to find a partner who understands you and go in line with your thinking. I have been so lucky. My partner has never pressed me for anything that I could alter what I think is best for me, for my career and for the relationship itself. My girlfriend is younger than me. She also has to work, to look their personal motivations, and luckily his personal motivation was not to be the girlfriend of Rafael Nadal, but to be herself and be competitive in what she has done, which is study.

  7. Thx augusta08 (and nadline) – it’s a very vague answer – not really saying anything at all about why they don’t get married – it’s good to hear that he likes kids and wants to have at least two 🙂

    • he is again being diplomatic and non-confrontational
partly he seems to say, this is how much I am willing to say about our private life, and that little bit that I have chosen to say is of course truthful

I think that nadline is right about his ties to his mom — his family life and especially to his mom..

We also know he likes many things to be stable and supportive of the insane lifestyle of a tennis pro who has to put out maximum efforts to stay in the top levels of tennis all while being on the road nearly the entire year. Partly fort this reason, and perhaps other reasons it seems to be a bigger stretch for rafa to marry at this stage, before his retires from the ATP, than it is/was for the other ‘big 4’.

      • chloro,

I think you are correct in saying that Rafa is being diplomatic and non-confrontational. He has always guarded his private life and especially his relationship with his girlfriend. It’s like he will talk about a lot of things, but then there is a line that is drawn.

I think Rafa will get married when he feels the time is right.

    • I think he’s saying his gf is in no hurry to get married as she is younger than him and that she understands that he can’t settle down whilst still on tour because Mallorcans are very family orientated.

Shireling, you speak spanish don’t you? You should be able to do a better translation than Google translate which is a bit convoluted.

  8. I should, I’m half Spanish, half Irish but grew up in Spain, that’s why my EN is so patchy. That translation on top isn’t bad though.. it’s scary when they ask him about mother-cell treatment and how it’s helped him he answers ‘yes, not only in sports but also in every-day life’ I hadn’t realised that his knees were at such a bad state before this new treatment.

    • ay, that’s what I have worried about for a few years now… that later in life he will live with quite a bit of pain in the knees. And he mentioned this before, that he would like to enjoy playing sports like football later in life but he might not be able to. I do hope that after his career he finds any new treatments that can somehow reduce the damage and pain.

—I do hope that after his career he finds any new treatments that can somehow reduce the damage and pain.—
        ===========================================

But, in the article I posted (June 12, 2015 at 11:38 am) Rafa says that stem cell treatment he received below the kneecap on his (left) knee at the end of 2013 worked well.

      • Agreed chloro, although it may have helped him in the short term, Rafa continues to express concern about quality of life after tennis. Some fail to understand the distinction.
