Federer announces tentative 2016 schedule

Roger Federer announced his tentative 2016 schedule on Thursday and it does not include any clay-court tournaments in advance of the French Open. Barring any changes, Federer will not play in between Indian Wells in mid-March and Roland Garros in late-May.

As the 34-year-old indicates, he will skip Masters 1000 events in Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. Nor is Davis Cup action a part of his plans, which comes as no surprise.

Federer will once again kick off his campaign at the Brisbane International in preparation for the Australian Open. The first leg of the Australian summer was kind to the 17-time Grand Slam champion in 2015, when he beat Milos Raonic for the Brisbane title.

Federer will play six events outside of Masters, slams, and the Rio Olympics. He is planning on Brisbane, then Rotterdam and Dubai, Stuttgart and Halle before Wimbledon, and Basel during the fall swing.

  1. Fed can’t give clay a bad name. No one can because it is a natural traditional tennis surface unlike hard courts and has existed almost forever. It doesn’t need Fed’s or anybody else’s endorsement. But what he has done, he has accepted his limitations and focused on his strengths.

  2. Fed grew up practising on clay. He cannot give it a bad name .

He knows he has no chance in hell to win any clay tourney and is making a wise decision. Secondly clay matches are long, he possibly wants to stay fresh for Wimby + Olympics
